I got this album soon after seeing Gem (HS's lead singer/guitarist) play at Wembley in the new Oasis line-up. It's not easy to get hold of these days, as Heavy Stereo's albums have all been deleted.
Quite simply, as soon as the first track (Chinese Burn) ran through its intro, I could tell what sort of record - and how good - it is. It rocks. In some ways, reminiscent of Oasis' Be Here Now - only miles better and more restrained.
The opening riff on the title track Deja Voodoo stands out as a great moment for me - funky Led Zeppelin? Tell Yer Ma is a good stomp-along, Cartoon Moon is nicely chilled, Reaching For Heaven is gorgeous, and Crown of Thoughts - well, you'll just have to find out for yourself. There are absolutely no bad or suspect songs on this album - almost flawless rock n roll. And Gem wrote everything, which can only be good for Oasis.
I suppose the greatest testimony I can offer for this album is the fact that I want to learn how to play the entire thing (I'm a guitarist), and could happily squeeze a couplke of these songs into a set. I've already figured out Crown of Thoughts and Chinese Burn, with Deja Voodoo not too far off.
Basically, if you're an Oasis fan, you NEED this record. If you like the Britpop rocknroll scene, you will really enjoy this album. I've only had it a couple of months, and it practicall lives in my stereo. Five stars? I'd give it six!
