Initially, when this album was released I thought like many others - a cynical record company stunt to get "fans" to buy the same album twice.
In reality, the claims that this is the way the album was originally concieved are obviously true from the first listen. I bought the original cutdown version and although I liked it I was not immediately blown away, however when you listen to the whole thing in both volumes it all makes sense. I was amazed that songs like "Pro False Idol" and "31/32" didn't make the original cut, Road Runner obviously wanting to release an unchallenging and linear album the first time around.
Degredation Trip Volumes 1&2 is quite simply a masterpiece with a depth that takes time to appreciate. In isolation, some of the songs don't quite work however, when the album is listened to as a whole, every track seems to complement the one that came before it. There are some gems too: "Angel Eyes" and "Locked On" are instantly catchy while "Owned" and "Chemical Tribe" show the album's darker side. The vocals also show a marked improvement over the last album, Boggy Depot, and the production is excellent.
So why only four stars? Well, Robert Trajillo (Suicidal, Infectious etc) and Mike Bordin (Faith No More) are arguable wasted on the album with solid, yet uninspired, performances. I'm also not a fan of one or two songs.
Overall this is a phenominal album that still inspires even after many listens. Buy it and play it over and over!

Ok, I can't even express how incredibly beautiful this album is. See my review for the one disc copy and then multiply it by two. As soon as I heard that a two disc version of this album would be available, I pre-ordered it.

Jerry Cantrell originally envisioned "Degradation Trip" as being a double disc album, with all the songs written by the time it came to recording. However, the record company didn't think a double disc would be commercially viable, so came to an agreement with Jerry that they would release a limited edition version of the album, uncut, with the exact running order he had planned. The result here is one of my albums of all time, only below "Layla and other assorted love songs", "Absolution", "Black Holes and Revelations" and "Electric Ladyland." Sell your granny, sell your car, sell your house - do whatever necessary to purchase this album. You will not be disappointed.

Alice in chains are a amazing band but these 2 volumes of work by jerry cantrell are amazing. I love the dark gritty sludgy fill the album has just grinding through your soul. Theres no filler just all killer.
