One of the legends of soul, Wilson Pickett had a voice so big it could out-bellow a full-on horn section and still convey an emotional fragility. From the hardest grooves of the pre-funk era to the steamiest of Southern ballads, he stamped his authority on everything he recorded.
This double-CD has been released to mark his death in January 2006 and features all the key tracks: "In The Midnight Hour", "Mustang Sally", "Land of 1000 Dances", "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love", as well as his version of "Hey Jude", so powerful a performance that it should have caused Paul McCartney to consider retirement.
The hits dried up in the early 1970s, but he continued performing and his influence lived on - helped by his songs appearing in movies The Blues Brothers and The Commitments. A man who could inject soul into the Archies' "Sugar Sugar" could never be ignored!
You're probablybetter off with the 1992 compilation A Man and a Half (more tracks, in chronological order), but - if that's unavailable -this is a decent alternative. --Alwyn Turner

A fair chunk of immortal soul music. Songs perfectly sung by the master. The Definitive Wilson Pickett sounds much better than I initially thought, perfectly remastered by genuine proffesionals. The highest voltage of The Land of 1000 Dances makes you feel good again even after a daily grind at work. Highly recommended for all from 5 to 100.

Finally Wilson Pickett music got a great sound treatment. Who did it? A english studio of course. I'd like to know why is so difficult in America to have the engineers working loud and without noise reduction. This is my fourth Pickett compilation cd. Now I can throw the other three in the garbage. When I listened to Mustang Sally, in a crystal clear and loud sound, brought tears in my eyes. THIS IS IT. A MUST HAVE.

Since James Brown's debut, no other black artist had gained the supremacy on pop scene with such speed like Wilson Picket, who was probably the most flaming and charismatic exponent of the soul genre. His contagious rhythm, expressive voice and those vibrant musical arrangements made of him in a very short time, an obligated reference at the moment to dance in the discotheques. Two genial versions will remain in our memory. "You keep me hanging on" and "Born to be wild."
So, in case you really want to collect the most relevant musical legends of the sixties, you must not let it pass this album, that contains basically the minimum facets of this unforgettable singer.

I just received my copy of this CD and I must echo the previous reviewers
sentiments. It is a real pleasure to listen to Wilson Pickett's soul
in great sound. I too will toss my other four WP CDs purchased in hopes
