Product Description

'This is not simply a guide telling you about the police application and assessment process, it is a complete manual on how to pass.' The Police service offers an interesting, well paid and secure occupation but there is a huge amount of competition for places. Only one in seven people applying will succeed. Being good is not good enough. This book will greatly improve your chances of becoming a Police Officer, Police Community Support Officer or Special Constable. Every police force in England and Wales uses the same national application form and assessment centre. This book tells you not just about the process, but what you need to do to impress the assessors. It provides: - Explanations of the application form, competency and motivational questions, along with specimen answers. - Behind the scenes insight into the application form, marking, the assessment centre, and what you need to do to pass. - In-depth descriptions of the constraints and techniques that the assessors are required to work with in the exercises. Learn the secrets of how, for example, role actors will HookA" and BlockA" candidates. - Detailed breakdowns of the exercises used, and the techniques you need to pass them. - Full length examples of key exercises, including four role plays and three written exercises, along with specimen interview questions and answers. - Explanations of how to evidence your commitment to diversity, ethics and impartiality.

From the Author

There are plenty of police recruitment books. This one is different though. I wrote it because the others all had serious failings. They are all about "being yourself", or simply decsribe the process you will undertake. My book does not. My book breaks each exercise down line by line, illustrating what you have to do to pass. The exercises are not pale imitations of what you may come across. If anything, they are longer and harder. understand mine and you will find the real stuff easy.

If I were a prospective buyer, I would want to know what made this book worth my investment compared to the other ones. I would say that if you look at the book in the flesh, it stands out from the herd. Other books are very generic in nature, and only get good write ups as the reviewers have nothing to compare them against. A Mondeo is a great car until you drive a Rolls Royce. I am confident enough in my work to say this. If you have another book, try mine and if it is not better, review mine and slate me! But I bet it won't happen!

It's true. This book not only tells you like it is, but preety much tells you the way you need to "act" come the assesment centre day..
From the begining the author (who is a former inspector) lays out the ground rules, why he doesn't paticuarly like the current system but at the same time reminding you that if you want to do the job. Tough.
The book goes from application form right through the assesment centre. As well as the core competencies that you will be marked on.
Further to that, the book goes in depth in how you can get the top marks in each competencie, like a checklist if you will and this relates as well to the interview and role plays.
Although not telling you exactly what "questions you will get on the day" in the interview or role play, it does give scenarios and what to expect and I would imagine, come assesment day, they aren't far off the mark. You can then get you and a friend to mark you and then remind yourself for next time when it's the real thing!
I think this is the best book by far for those who are about to attend the assesment centre. It's up to date (released 2010)and I believe sets you in good steed for what to expect.

Simply a book to help pass the Assessment Centre, a little bit anti-police in the first few pages seems very critical of the recruitment procedure.

Does not mention which parts are specifically for Specials and PCSO's who do not go through the same full assessment process.

Other than that interesting book, but will be hard to sell on once used and the person has gone through the assessment process.

The book is written in a well structured way and is easy to follow, it makes it very clear on what the Assessors are looking for and the pitfalls to avoid.

Well written, pleasant to read and full of intelligent insights. An honest and highly informative book, with a tidy breakdown of the entire recruitment process. Has been an invaluable part of my preparation for my upcoming attendance at an Assessment Centre.
