The Definitive Guide to HTML5 WebSocket is the ultimate insider's WebSocket resource. This revolutionary new web technology enables you to harness the power of true real-time connectivity and build responsive, modern web applications. This book contains everything web developers and architects need to know about WebSocket. It discusses how WebSocket-based architectures provide a dramatic reduction in unnecessary network overhead and latency compared to older HTTP (Ajax) architectures, how to layer widely used protocols such as XMPP and STOMP on top of WebSocket, and how to secure WebSocket connections and deploy WebSocket-based applications to the enterprise. Build real-time web applications with HTML5. This book: Introduces you to the WebSocket API and protocol Describes and provides real-world examples of protocol communication over WebSocket Explains WebSocket security and enterprise deployment What you'll learn Understand the WebSocket API and Protocol Build Instant Messaging and Chat Applications over WebSocket with XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) Implement a Publish/Subscribe Messaging Protocol over WebSocket with STOMP (Simple Text Oriented Messaging Protocol) VNC with the Remote Framebuffer Protocol Learn WebSocket Security Deployment Considerations for an Enterprise WebSocket Architecture Who this book is for The Definitive Guide to HTML5 WebSocket is for web developers and architects who want to build cutting-edge web applications with WebSocket. 5.0 out of 5 stars Technical know-how and hands-on examples: 0-60 with WebSockets 1 April 2013
By Ilya Grigorik - Published on
Full disclosure: I had the opportunity to review the early version of the book, and also wrote the foreword for the book. And the good news is, I gave it a glowing review based on the early drafts, and it has only gotten better since! The book strikes a perfect balance between technical know-how, and hands-on examples and implementation.

If you're not familiar with WebSockets, then think of it as an upgraded TCP connection, but with clean browser API and a set of convenient abstractions such as built-in message framing, protocol negotiation, bi-directional communication, multiplexing, and more. Broadly speaking there are two parts to WebSocket: the browser API specified by W3C, and the wire protocol defined by IETF (RFC 6455). The book begins with a good overview of each component - if you don't much care for the wire protocol, you can skip right over. Alternatively, if you're a protocol geek (like myself), then you have a great launching point for further research - the book covers just enough to answer all the common questions.

Following the technical introduction, the book dissects three hands-on examples: an XMPP chat implementation layered over WebSockets, a STOMP messaging client, and finally a full blown VNC implementation over WebSockets, which includes hands-on demos and code examples of how to work with binary data, protocols, and all other important WebSocket features. Finally, the book concludes with a good discussion on deployment and security best practices - an area all too often overlooked. Long story short, this book should take you from 0 to 60 with WebSockets, and you'll have fun doing it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wish it was more comprehensive 30 April 2013
By Rajesh Kaveti - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
It is a good basic introduction and has some good examples that gets you started. They do not provide any help if you would want to deploy this technology in an enterprise environment. There is no detail on how to solve tougher problems like security or DMZ issues which in my view is the biggest challenge for WebSockets. The example with Node.js does not help me in taking it to the next level.

I was hoping that it will be give me more pointers to how we can deploy this technology with challenges around network security etc. It does go at a very high level but would like see more drill down.

Very concise complete coverage of the topic. I found the example Web Socket server implementation in Node.js especially helpful. Easy to read and understand, very well written.

Great book. A must read for anyone who wants to fully understand Websockets and put that knowledge to good use. In my case, it was a decisive help to write a Websocket extension to Node Simple Router (https://

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to WebSocket 21 Mar 2014

The book is well written and examples are very helpful and complement the book well. The VM Appliance downloadable from the book website is simply brilliant. Everything you need to learn WebSocket (nodejs,Chrome, wireshark, etc) are all pre-installed in this Ubuntu VM. You just load it using VirtualBox and your learning lab is ready to go. Nothing to set up. This alone worth 10X the price of the book. Great works by these authors. Thank you!
