This is a fabulous, funky, generous Chic compilation - and the best of the best of Chic. For a start, the remastered sound is just terrific - you can hear the funk and get into the groove of some of the most danceable tracks ever recorded in recent times. Then there is that this is the only Chic compilation to cover their whole career - from the 'Good Times' of 77-79 to the lesser known gems post-1980. If you are only drawn to the timeless, irresistable hits - these are all present and correct on the first disc, but the second disc is wonderful - including tracks from all their 1980s albums and 1992's comeback 'Chic-ism'. A breathtaking treat of an album and an absolute bargain price wise!

One of Disco’s trademarks was the importance of the track over the artist. Great one-off songs and maybe if you were lucky, two or even three good cuts from a single artist. The exception of course was Chic. Nile Rogers, Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson were a fully formed rhythm section when they found their groove in 1977. I remember the first time I heard Dance, Dance, Dance - I was driving (a Vauxhall Viva no less), this was good. Then in April 1978 I stepped into a proper nightclub for the very first time. The Lights, dark corners, gorgeous girls, heady perfumes and Everybody Dance on the turntable - this was definitely the place. Many great songs were to follow – you know them, all conceived with Chic’s unique “deep hidden meaning”. Pretentious, trois, no not really – you had the privilege of listening to three great musicians who created a completely original sound. Groundbreaking drumming, base, and choppy guitar overlaid with crisp, clean strings and acoustic piano – must be the 1978 vintage. Every track was production master-class - the chant intro to Le Freak and the sweeping piano intro to Good Times, supreme confidence, hitting it on “the one”. Typically, well known funk and soul acts did the fast stuff with some slow love songs thrown in, or vice versa. Again, Chic were unique – they tended to avoid the love thing preferring sad, wistful slow to med-tempo songs e.g. I Want Your Love and Thinking Of You (Sister Sledge).

It’s interesting to note that even during the Disco era, nobody really tried to copy Chic. I guess when something’s that good you just admire it and listen in awe. Now for the bad news - this compilation is actually a bit of a mess. All the good stuff is on CD1 and there’s very little that’s worth listening to on CD 2. Another unimaginative repackage and another missed opportunity to showcase the most important artist of the Disco era.

Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards drove the Chic dance project ~ both of them excellent musicians. A lot of disco was poor but not this. Great funk guitar and incredible bass lines (good vocals too!)

People always want to categorise music into simple terms, moreso when it's music made by black musicians. To lump in Chic with say, the Village People, is just plain wrong. The arrangements, musicianship and even lyrically Chic are a million miles ahead of much of the music made in the 70's and 80's.
