Although little known abroad, within Brazil Elis Regina is without doubt the most celebrated of all female vocalists. And she is the only singer ever to have achieved iconic status within the country for her voice alone. It is a voice of astounding versatility; soaring and soulful, infused with sweet melancholy, girlish innocence, operatic tragedy; always perfectly controlled and effortless in its range and intonation. Legend has it that at sessions guitarists used to tune to her instead of the piano so perfect was her pitch. When she died, alone and of an overdose, Brazil descended into national mourning.
This compilation goes some way to showcase her talent, cherry picking gems from her mainstream back catalogue. Elis was responsible for some of the best renditions of a number of Tom Jobim's songs, many of them for the classic Elis & Tom. Included here are a deliciously seductive version of 'Só Tinha de Ser Com Você' and a delicate, melancholy 'Corcovado'. She was also the first to record material by João Bosco, Gilberto Gil and Milton Nascimento and to bring them to a mainstream audience. Early recordings selected here include Milton's 'Nada Será como antes', a technically blinding version of Gil's 'Amor ate o Fim' and Bosco's 'O Mestre Sala dos Mares'. Less well known but even more spellbinding are 'Aquarela do Brasil' which flits between tragic melancholy and sweet happiness and 'Atrás da Porta': a master class in controlled singing and like Elis's all too short life, instilled with impending tragedy.

Elis Regina is very possibly the best brazilian MPB singer ever and she proves it here.
But her voice and choice of songs also show her up as much more than that. Because she ventures into risky territory at the time (mostly the 60s and the 70s) in Brazil under a military dictatorship with the ensuing censorship...
She ventures into rock, folk, psychadelism, protest song.
Always remaining true to herself: "this world is just a passage, a place for us to learn - it would make no sense otherwise"

Yes, she had the perfect pitch, yes, she was the authority in most- if not all- of Jobin's songs written during her life. But this? This is Elis. Woman/ little girl singing a prayer in every song, emotion in every song, not just performance- though she knew how to command a crowd- even through a studio reccording. Highly recommended.

A good single-disc overview of Elis' best work. 20 April 2009
By Dean Winiarski - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This is a compilation album. If you're a new fan, this is a great place to start. This disc has a very nice selection of some of her best work. The sound is good, and the sequencing of tunes is very agreeable.

If you recently got turned on to Elis and you live in the U.S., maybe you've already noticed how IMPOSSIBLE it is to find her CD's. Judging from this alone, it's hard to imagine how she can be the most legendary singer in Brazilian history--but she is! In fact, one of the nicest things about this anthology is that you can probably find a decent copy for less than a truckload of arms and legs. Even though it's out of print there were affordable used copies here on Amazon last time I looked.

One thing you must understand: this collection BARELY SCRATCHES THE SURFACE of Elis Regina's genius. I'd advise you to track down as many of her original albums as you can--especially "Como E Porque." And her duet albums with Tom Jobim and Toots Theilemans are both essential Bossa Nova masterpieces (and far easier to find than her strictly "solo" material).

Even though I have most of her catalog, I still like to hear this disc now and then because I'm fond of the song selection.

If you need help connecting with her other recordings, contact me through my profile. I'll help if I possibly can.

Quite agreed 9 Nov. 2009

This is a great Elis starter. But remember, she had further emotional and artistic latitude to offer over the years. Be therefore prepared for further VERY pleaseant surprises. The entire Brazil still loves her (?oh why did you go away, Elis?), and now all us Latinos also love her daughter who is a great singer on her own, Maria Rita.
- La pimentinha lives in our minds forever!
