Led Zeppelin was the definitive heavy metal band. It wasn't just their crushingly loud interpretation of the blues -- it was how they incorporated mythology, mysticism, and a variety of other genres (most notably world music and British folk) -- into their sound. Led Zeppelin had mystique. They rarely gave interviews, since the music press detested the band. Consequently, the only ... Read more in Amazon's Led Zeppelin Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Zep zap back! 31 July 2010
Format:Audio CD
Oh how I love this band. I've been following Led Zeppelin since the 70's, and then I purchased the "Remasters" (1990) box sets, which proved most satisfying until recently when I decided it was time to reacquaint myself with the original albums. Cue this stunning box set.
Originally issued to little fanfare in September 2008 to mark the 40th anniversary of Led Zeppelin's formation, it is an absolute must for any fan.
The Japanese produced vinyl replica sleeves are a thing of joy, beauty and perfection, with every detail painstakingly reproduced in full, even down to the plain paper inner sleeves of the first three albums. All come complete with the obligatory Japanese obi strips, and are housed in protective resealable plastic outer covers.

The first album even comes with its original turquoise lettering instead of the more familiar orange. If you have a vinyl copy of this limited original pressing, you are looking at 800 worth of record!
Extras included the aforementioned orange sleeve, plus the five alternative sleeves from "In Through The Out Door".
The bonus tracks from the "Remasters" sets are all present and correct, except for the pointless "Moby Dick/Bonzo's Montreux", and all are tacked onto the end of "Coda", albeit uncredited on the album sleeve. All the studio albums feature Jimmy Page's 1990 remasters.
"The Song Remains The Same" was untouched until 2007 when it was remastered in expanded form, and it is that version that is included here, although like "Coda" none of the extra tracks are credited on the sleeve.
The box itself is of good solid design, with the bands four symbols embossed in silver on the front, side and back.

3.0 out of 5 stars Watch out for alternative versions of this set 26 Aug 2012
By Thomas
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase

Received this set a while back I must say it was thrilling opening this boxset.
All the albums nicely wrapped up in a neat box as mini LP relicas.

But then after some investigation I realized that this was not the original Japanese release.
As an example Physical Grafitti did not have the cut outs in the sleeve nor the wheel in Zep III.
The CD themselves do not have the original print.

Would recommend you to have a look at your own copy or carefully investigate before buying one.

Before investing in the Definitive Collection Mini LP Replica I already had all Led Zeppelin albums on vinyl. I have to admit I was quite skeptical as to how faithful they had managed to transpose the original album art onto a mini replica. I was never so happily surprised!! Each mini replica is literally a `clone' in miniature of the original vinyl including inside cover with printed lyrics and all. Double albums; "Physical Graffiti" and "The Song Remains The Same" are also faithfully reproduced as the original double vinyl package. "Led Zeppelin III" comes with the rotating wheel, "Physical Graffiti" has the window see-through cutters and "In Through the Out Door" even comes in its brown-paper bag. But what really surprised me was that the producers went as far as duplicating the same texture of the paper and board used on the original vinyl packaging. The inside cover of "Houses of the Holy" has a ribbed textured board over which the lyrics are printed, The cover for "The Song Remains The Same" live album has an egg-shell hammered texture while "Coda" has embossed lettering ... all these details are faithfully reproduced in this ultimate Definitive Collection Mini LP Replica. As for the music ... what can I say? ... simply the greatest collection by what in my opinion is the greatest rock band in the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sort of Japanese editions, but not quite 26 Sep 2011
Format:Audio CD
I ordered this set mostly because I love the japanese mini lp editions of just about any LP, and have a few imported from Japan. Billing this as an edition with the japanese editions inside is a slight lie, they have been modified, and for that reason I am disappointed with this set.

For a start, the OBI strips are fake. True Obi strips do not wrap around the cover like they do here, they should merely overlay one end of the disc cover. With these they loop over the cover, in like a ring shape. not a good start. Even worse are the resealable bags, they are the worst quality I have ever seen, I have ripped 2 just getting to the contents inside (and trust me I am kid-gloves when it comes to these things). I am going to have to source some proper Japanese resealable bags to replace ALL of them as they will all rip.

Can't fault the musical content inside, but I am very disappointed with the final quality of this set. They are sold as Japanese mini-replica editions, and they are not. The disc and the inserts seem fine in themselves, and the sleeve artwork and quality is up to scratch, but due to the previous points mentions it is missing that final seal of quality usually present in the japanese editions (the japanese insert/lyric sheets also do not exist).

Its a wierd set really all considered, why they have the obi-strip in the first place is very odd indeed as they are not the true japanese editions. To be more truthful they should of just done away with them like the Beatles Mono set.
