4.0 out of 5 stars As collections go, an enjoyable one! 12 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
The problem with a collection in general, and with collections of The Alan Parsons Project in specific, is that there is no such thing as satisfying every fan. I have listened to the Project for 21 years. The first record I heard, which also happens to be my favorite, was "The Turn of a Friendly Card". While few tracks will beat the title suite of that record, there are other individual favorites, such as "Ammonia Avenue", for example. I didn't find a whole lot of them on this CD, but I still like it. Why? Because this is a compilation that shows off quite a few of the different styles that the Project have explored over the years. I am a bit saddened that they didn't put any tracks from "Tales..." on these CD:s, but it still has at least one very good track from each of the records represented. In nine cases out of ten, the Project's albums were concept based, and by pulling a track from here and there, the end result isn't the same as some of the masterpieces they have produced over the years. But, what can I say? The group's songs are still enjoyable out of context.

This wonderful two-CD collection (34 songs!) has some of the finest songs of the Alan Parsons Project on it. All of their greatest works are here, including (my favorites) I Robot, I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You, Time, Eye in the Sky and Don't Answer Me. If you have ever been a fan of the Alan Parsons Project (like me), then you will love this collection.
Now, it must be admitted that part of APP's strength was the cohesion of their albums - I, Robot was one that I listened to until the tape wore out! That cohesion is lost with this collection, as the songs are thrown together with songs that have no relation, and that is a pity. But, that said, all of these songs are great, and while this collection isn't a replacement for all of the APP albums, it is a great collection to listen too.
I, for one, love listening to this CD collection, and highly recommend it to you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Songs mixed into eachother! 22 Oct 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
When I bought this compilation, I exepected a collection of indivudual songs. But some songs are mixed into eachother. I hate that. I want the songs complete as they should be. Especially the beautiful "The turn of a friendly card". I want to be able to repeat this song over and over again and hear the complete song, not with the start of the intro of "Snake eyes" before the song has ended. And imagine you use the shuffle-function on your cd-player: songs will be cut off without a proper fade or start without a complete intro. What a waste, this compilation... I wish I never bought it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poor Choice of Tracks 24 Aug 2004
Format:Audio CD
Some APP albums were much better than others, yet equal weight seems to have been given to several albums here, resulting in some glaring omissions. This album serves to underscore the main problem with the APP - it could never decide whether it was a traditional songwriting outfit (complete with pristine orchestral backdrop) or a prog-synth outfit, such were the problems of being able to "do it all". The net result is classy engineering and arrangements on nearly every track, but with only a few tracks having inspired and memorable music. Where are such classic APP tracks as "The Goldbug" and "I'd Rather Be A Man" ??? More a Definitive Miscalculation than Definitive Collection. Better off buying individual albums and doing your own compilation!

4.0 out of 5 stars My kind of music 13 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD
I was mainly interested in the Eye in the Sky album, but most of the tracks were on this. The other tracks are more commercial and, in my view, far less appealing. Notwithstanding that, the album is one of my most-played, with Old and Wise still able to make the hairs stand up on my neck.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great: an opportunity missed. 4 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
With a little more thought when it came to track selection this album would have rated way beyond 5 stars. But, sadly, as with all definitive albums the compilers have chosen a safe course by giving equal weight to all other contributory works regardless of their individual quality. Any Parsons' officionardo must surely agree that the classic works end with Ammonia Avenue, and that little since then has captured the originality and inventiveness of earlier times. One notable exception from this current collection that is truely criminal, is the unjustifiable ignoring of 'You Won't Be There', from the 'Eve' album. Quite how one of the greatest love songs ever written can be overlooked in favour of some of the pretentious fluff of 'Gaudi' defies logical explanation. Perhaps the next compiler of a Parsons' retrospective will reward quality rather than concentrating on providing an equitable share of the play list to every album.
