Format:Audio CD
Three sons of American servicemen based in Britain formed this group in 1969 (reduced to a duo in 1977) so perhaps that explains the rather grand group name that they chose. Given all the great music that is recorded in the United States, any group that choose the name America has a lot to live up to.
In the event, America did well in America, with two number one hits (A horse with no name, Sister golden hair) and several top ten hits including I need you, Ventura highway, Tin man, Lonely people and You can do magic - this last song was their only significant success after Dan Peek left in 1977. America were less successful in Britain, where they had only three hits, two of which were minor although they made the top three with A horse with no name. Their other notable songs include Muskrat love (also recorded by Captain and Tennille) and Sandman.
Overall, America's style of soft-rock harmony music owed a lot to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young although they were more successful on the singles chart than that illustrious group (with or without Neil Young).
For most people, this is the definitive collection of their music, containing all the tracks that they are famous for and some other great songs that might encourage some to explore their music in greater depth. If you only ever buy one collection of America's music, this is a good one to choose.

Format:Audio CD
Because I am an America fan, and want to buy every CD that is put out by the group, I bought this CD, but if I were not a fan, I wouldn't do so. Why? Because the 23 songs on this CD are taken from America's Highway Box Set, and so if you already have the box set, this CD sure doesn't seem definitive. The only song on this CD that doesn't appear on the box set is Political Poachers, and why this song is considered Definitive America, I don't know. Even the liner notes are an abbreviated version of the liner notes from the box set. There doesn't seem to be an explanation, either, as to why these songs are definitive, because not all are hits. But for those who do not want to pay a lot for the box set, this is a good start, although I would recommend waiting for Rhino's U. S. release, which is called The Complete Greatest Hits, because that release will include two new songs by America.

Format:Audio CD
This is a hits collection and - therefore - packed with the stuff you might have heard on the radio years ago. As a long-standing fan I'd recommend any of their first five Warners albums [America/Homecoming/Hat Trick/Holiday/Hearts] for a real sense of their varied abilities. However, the band were hopelessly under rated in the UK and the presence of this album in my local Tescos, on Stuart MacConie's 'Critical List' show and - in large numbers - in my local record shops is a little belated redressing of the balance. The curious could start with this album. But remember but this was an albums band and some of their original albums still stand up well years later.

The sound of this album is brilliant, my boyfriend really loved it will chill you out with its easy lyrics and brillant songs. Well worth purchasing a copy to listen to.
