Amazon.co.uk Review

The latest romantic comedy from the Working Title production line, Definitely, Maybe got a little forgotten on its original cinematic release in early 2008. Yet beneath the covers here is a smart, enjoyable film, that does Ryan Reynolds' potential as a romantic lead no harm whatsoever.

The story of Definitely, Maybe is mainly told in flashback, as Reynolds' daughter in the film (played by Little Miss Sunshine's Abigal Breslin) quizzes him as to how he met his mother, who he’s in the process of getting a divorce from. Reynolds' tale follows three failed romances, and the film holds back on revealing the answer to its mysteries until pretty much the final reel.

Deftly written and directed by Adam Brooks (who previously had scribing credits on Practical Magic, Wimbledon and Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason, among others), Definitely, Maybe has several factors in its corner. Firstly, the script is witty, well layered, and engaging. Secondly, the casting is good, too. Reynolds is in good form here, and Elizabeth Banks, Isla Fisher and Rachel Weisz turn in fine performances as the three women in his life. And finally, while only slightly outstaying its welcome, Definitely, Maybe achieves a satisfying balance of wit and romance, and then manages to squeeze in a great Kevin Kline cameo on top. Can't be bad.

It may not be talked about in the same breath as other Working Title successes such as Notting Hill and Love Actually, yet Definitely, Maybe is very worthy of DVD discovery. With good rewatch value too, it's a recommended buy. --Simon Brew

Synopsis

Ryan Reynolds and a bevy of excellent actresses star in this smart and touching romantic comedy about a little girl trying to understand her father's complicated history with women. Will Hayes (Reynolds) is in the midst of a divorce and his 11-year-old daughter Maya (Abigail Breslin) wants to understand what went wrong with her parents' relationship. She begs her father to tell her the entire story of how he met her mother. Will begrudgingly agrees, but changes the names of everyone involved, leaving it up to Maya to decipher who in the story is her mother. Thus Will begins his tale, weaving a romantic and amusing maze of missed connections and bad timing with the likes of three beautiful women: Summer (Rachel Weisz), April (Isla Fisher), and Emily (Elizabeth Banks). Will bounces from relationship to relationship, misunderstandings and confusion thwarting him every step of the way. Who will he end up with? Which woman is ultimately right for him?.
Reynolds has long outgrown his Van Wilder days, and does an excellent job of holding his own with the talented Fisher, Weisz, and Banks. The film is certainly a stand-out romantic comedies. The women are intelligent, well-drawn characters, and the relationships are painted with a funny, but realistic eye. Definitely, Maybe is a smart and sexy take on the complexities of love while sending a very positive, honest message to children of divorce.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, warm, but not your average rom-com, 8 Jun 2008
By Alexandra B (Shrewsbury, UK) - See all my reviews
We went to see this on its cinema release - I was not at all convinced, it really sounded like a typical romantic comedy. Not that I have a problem with that, but usually wouldn't really bother to go and see it. As it happened, it's a cleverly written 'love mystery', where a little girl is desperate to know how her parents got together, even though they are now getting divorced. Abigail Breslin is great as always - remember Little Miss Sunshine? - but all the main characters sparkle with a witty script and good storyline.
It's bittersweet in many places, seeing how easy it is for life to get in the way of relationships, or for the timing to be wrong, but I absolutely promise you will finish the film with a warm glow for the rest of the day. It's not cloying, or saccharine, and gives a real impression of just how complicated love can be - but also how enriching and life-affirming.

3.0 out of 5 stars An original storyline makes this a rom-com that should appeal to everyone, 15 Sep 2008
Will Hayes, played by Ryan Reynolds, is about to get divorced. His daughter can't make sense of why her Mum and Dad are splitting up and asks him to explain how he met her Mum, right from the beginning. From this moment we are then taken back by Will to where his rollercoaster love life began, from his very first relationship, right up to the present. We see it all played out, with brief interludes from time to time back to the present when his daughter needs to question her Dad on any particularly bewildering moments.

The story is very honest and uncomplicated. Although billed as a romantic comedy, the writers have deliberately not made it a 'laugh out loud' type film, instead concentrating on good drama and injecting it with lots of subtle humour that works well. The film never goes down the route of over-the-top sickly sentimentality, but instead shows how real people can sometimes get things wrong and how easy it is to derail a promising relationship.

This is a very good romantic comedy that successfully combines a genuinely engaging storyline with plenty of good humour, a winning formula that should even win over the romantic comedy sceptics, check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is how Rom-Com's Should Be, 21 Sep 2008
By B. Gristwood "Travelling Man" (Liverpool, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Firstly, i'm a guy, and although i'm not aversed to the rom-com, i prefer the "blow things up" catagory. Nevertheless, my girlfriend and i got this and watched it on DVD last night and i have to say, WHAT A FANTASTIC FILM.

It's interesting, insightful, funny. I think i spent a lot of time on the edge of the sofa, interested to what happens next. No Spoiler here, but the end is how films should finish. I finished watching this film and instantly all i wanted to do was watch it again.

If you want a great film that you could probably watch a number of times and never get bored, BUY THIS FILM.

ohh and if you are a guy, the presence of Isla Fisher and Rachel Wiesz is never going to be a bad thing.
