BBC Review

In August 1994 just a few months after Kurt Cobain killed himself (and the grunge that he had been the reluctant figurehead of), Oasis’ debut Definitely Maybe was released.

To put this seismic attitude shift into perspective; Kurt’s working title for final Nirvana album, In Utero, was I Hate Myself And I Want To Die. Definitely Maybe’s most popular song is called “Live Forever”.

So how did two punters from Burnage, an unremarkable area of Manchester, become so famous? Despite the fact that the second album, (What’s The Story?) Morning Glory, sold more copies and propelled them to tabloid superstardom and No 10 Downing Street, the answers are all here.

The album kicks off with “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star”, which Noel has since said was the end of everything he wanted to say as a songwriter. He’s right in a sense, as it’s easily one of the greatest songs about being up on stage ever written. On arguably Liam’s greatest ever vocal performance he goads all-comers with: 'You’re not down with who I am/ Look at you now you’re all in my hands tonight.' And that’s without even considering the attendant guitar riffs that snag your brain like barbed wire on your best jumper. If you’ve got a mate or relative who’s having a bad time of it, play them this, then watch them grow ten feet tall and walk down the street like they rule the whole world.

Although at this point it’s easy to imagine the faces of every other British band of the time sadly searching the classifieds for a new vocation there are still ten more tracks left. How about “Supersonic”, a sky-scraping anthem about individuality adopted by the masses? Or “Cigarettes And Alcohol”, a brash T Rex paean to hedonism? Or “Bring It On Down”, a non-stop, no-messing punk stomp to certain death or glory?

It’s easy to trot out the tired argument that these Mancs don’t have the power of The Stone Roses or The Smiths because the songs don’t have the wistful, melancholic air that one comes to expect from songs emerging from that rainy Lancashire city. Is it true to say ‘It’s just Beatles songwriting with Sex Pistols attitude’? Maybe. But have these songs transcended the Conservative-greyed and Britpop-glossed years in which they became public property to become heroic, gigantic pop monuments in their own right? Definitely. --Lou Thomas

Rarely do we come across albums of perfect splendour. We all know Definitely Maybe is one of the all time finest so what do we think when we get the opportunity to obtain a track which is not available on any B-side ? We jump on it. For me Sad Song is a glimpse into one of Noel Gallagher's finest musical moments. It's got everything in it that we know and want from him, including the familiar descending bass line that turns a classic song into an Oasis classic song. Why Sad Song has been hidden from us I'll never know...it's a 'Live By The Sea' exclusive. The other extra track 'Cloudburst' stands alongside The Stone Roses 'Standing Here' as a top notch B-side track...spot the difference between the two ?

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest album of all time! 5 Oct 2005
Format:Audio CD
Without a doubt the greatest album I have ever heard. Backed to the gills with anthematic classics. Rock N' Roll Star and Cigerette's & Alcohol are insane enough to get any party rocking while Live Forever, Supersonic and Slide Away have all the anthematic qualities you'ld expect from Oasis. Shakermaker has so many wonderfully Beatles inspired qualities. Digsy's Dinner is just a great pop song. I could just go on and on about how amazing this album is but I wont because while you're reading this you could be buying it so get ordering if you haven't already!

5.0 out of 5 stars Noise and confusion... oh and some lasagne 5 Sep 2006
Format:Audio CD
Once every so often, a debut album comes along that is so self-assured, so complete in its own self-belief that it takes you along with it. It doesn't even need to be the most accomplished or the most profound.

"Definitely Maybe" sounds like it's very good and it knows it.

From the opening noise of "Rock And Roll Star", it's not shy. Here we discovered the best rock and roll vocalist for a generation and his brother who had an instinctive songwriting ability.

Never mind the short-fall of the others. The drumming is rudimentary, the bass is buried and the rhytmn guitar is workmanlike. But that doesn't seem to matter. They all fall into line behind the force of the songs.

"Live Forever" is brash and emotive and beautiful and definite. "Supersonic" is all arrogant swagger and attitude and sounds perfect. "Bring It On Down" is corrosive punk which works despite some of the worst drumming on a great album ever to have happened. "Slide Away" is stunning and moving. Yeah alright "Digsy's Dinner" is just ok and "Married With Children" might not cut the mustard but they're not bad enough to detract from the quality of this album.

A statement of intent that still sounds essential.
