As a fan of Jackie Leven I am clearly biased, but I do think this CD contains some of his best work to date. In fact the first three tracks are probably three of the best on any of his CD's. Dave Thomas's voice adds extra edge to You've Lost That Loving Feeling (a clever adaptation of the classic song) and Paris Blues. As ever Jackie is not afraid to experiment with poetry. His deep Celtic voice just seems to get better and better and as always the production is very clever and expertly done. If you haven't heard any of Jackie's music before, then try this out and I'm sure you will be back for more. Long may he reign in the Kingdom of Fife.

4.5 stars really 21 Jan 2012
Format:Audio CD
Not quite as good as Levens very best, but every track is still admirable. The title track is probably the best and it is full on Jackie, waves of sound from that incredible swelling voice. Keys to the forest and Hand is Pale are perhaps a little obvious and fey, and Morbid Sky, although good, is an maybe Jackie deliberately setting out to show what really tough angst ridden songs he can write.

Slightly variable 13 Jun 2005

This has some excellent tracks (single Father, Keys To the Forest), but other tracks (Paris Blues) are not really as much to my taste. Try other albums such as Night Lilies first!

Ponderous Poetics 20 Jan 2005
By R. J MOSS - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Leven's coverage of the 60s classic, 'You've Lost That Lovin Feeling' is very impressive. David Thomas lends a cracked harmony to it that is just right. At the opposite end of this CD is,'Morbid Sky'; opposite in every sense of emotion & harmonics. Thomas's Ubu connotations offer, on this track, a new dimension to the notion of displacement within the context of Leven's CD. Hard to take seriously that Leven claims the song(from Thomas's, Mirrorman) as part of one of 'the key recordings of our time'(sleeve notes). Not my time! The real problem on this outing is its pretentious poetic stigma. The writing and musical arrangements are leaden and literal. Leven has a good voice, perfect for crooning lullabyes & lovesick ballads. If you're getting on, like me, think Jim Reeves. More recently, think David Sylvan. But, sorry Jackie, the self importance is written too large, even on the packaging. No amount of hot wind can conceal the weakness of the lyrics. The less said the better.
