If you're a collector of Hackett this will not disappoint. The wailing guitar, that distinct vocal of Pete Hicks and the retro track are all there (Sentimental Institution). This, his 4th solo and gold selling album is not his best and "that" track that you can't help put on repeat is not there ("The Virgin and The Gypsy" track 2 on "Spectral Mornings")but there are the classic Hackett tracks -'Time To Get Out' and 'The Show'. I sometimes feel Genesis were all the poorer for missing his input. I feel it's the direction that they really should have gone in. All in all a really good CD, just not a spectacular one.

What an album from Steve Hackett ! Starts off with the superb 'The Steppes' which always reminds me of the advert for Denim in the 70s ! The music runs seamless into 'Time to get out' and the odd sounding "slow" song (Steve was always big on humour when live !) 'Slogans'. My favourite track on the album comes next - Pete Hicks' vocals and harmonies on 'Leaving' are fantastic and lead nicely into the acoustic treat 'Two vamps as guest' which reprises the theme from 'Leaving'. Side two of the original album somewhat sagged for me but does contain an upbeat instrumental 'Jacuzzi' and a film-theme sounding 'Hammer in the sand'. 'The Toast' relegated to a b-side is quite atmospheric whilst 'The Show' (described as a "plodding dirge" in one review I read at the time) is pure disco - quite a change in style for Steve. Not half a big change in style as the last track on the album 'Sentimental Institution' which sounds like an electrically recorded 40s song ! Weird but it works.

This cd reissue contains some bonus tracks including 'Hercules Unchained' the rocky b-side to the single release on 'The Show'. Vintage Hackett.

This was a golden era for Mr Hackett after shedding the shackles of Genesis he was really into his stride by now and his unique playing style had established him as the guitarists guitarist. The Steppes is probaly one of his most brooding pieces and builds to a wailing climax before drifitng away into the next track. If you are a budding prog guitarist Mr H is the ideal person to learn your trade from
