Give the drummer some....., 28 May 2011

As a jazz fan, Kate Bush's music has always appealed due to the strong musicality of work and it's intelligence which has taken it several notches above her contemporaries. Last year I started to explore her music in earnest and was absolutely bowled over by "Aerial" which seemed to have set the benchmark for artists working in the pop field. Much of the appeal stemmed from the influence from other sources whether is was Frederick Delius or ECM-inspired jazz. This is an album which is generally well considered by jazz fans. Having not previously been familiar with this tune, I have been staggered by the comments here which seem totally to have disregarded the exceptional drumming by Steve Gadd (often vilified in jazz circles for his association with the more commercial elements of jazz) which has breathed life into this tune. The groove underneath the theme is brilliant and a far cry from the boom-chink of much current or even previous pop music. I totally agree that this is a brilliant tune and the new arrangement works particularly well. My only regret is that Kate Bush has not gone the whole hog and completely re-worked this album with jazz musicians as opposed to re-mixing the tracks from 20 years ago. That would be extremely interesting. Still, can't see what the grumbles are about. Plenty of meat in this tune to provide a credible jazz vehicle. Perhaps some of the KB fans posting here are a bit square?

Definite Grower, 5 April 2011

A new take on Deeper Understanding starts on the back foot as the original is so well-liked and difficult to better. The changes in the new version aren't subtle and the vocaloid in particular jars at first listen. However, repeated plays give a clearer idea of what the artist had in mind and the brilliance shines through, showing Kate has lost none of her creativity. After listening to the copy on YouTube I was glad to have bought the original as the difference in clarity really improves the production.

Real grade - 7/10 As Kate Bush fans have never really heard her re-interpret any of her songs (pensioners may recall a tour where a band basically reproduced the records) hearing what she does to an old song was always likely to be an odd experience. DU 2011 is certainly that. Mostly gone are the Trio Bulgarka, and not before time to this listener. Also gone is the horrible drum sound that the original had. Not all the new additions work though. Vocoders and autotune may be in, but they should not be allowed within a mile of a Kate Bush record. The new lead vocal is the main attraction for me, Bush actually sounds quite ragged, and to this long time listener to Bob Dylan and Tom Waits that is a good thing. The long fade out with it's electronic trickery and harmonica has also won me over. A startlingly un-commercial single, this is no masterpiece, it is though an odd and at times wonderful song. If the forthcoming album is as headscratching as this it may take years to actually assess!
