Though sadly obscure and underexposed to the casual reggae fan, (having never benefited from a Trojan anthology or featured on ANY of their ubiquitous compilations), those of us who have already been entranced by the vocal and production work of Vivian "Yabby You" Jackson since hearing the astounding "Jesus Dread" collection on Blood & Fire will have been waiting excitedly for this one to drop since the release date was announced. Pressure Sounds' "Deeper Roots" features 19 vintage 70's roots and culture tracks that bear further testament to Yabby's astounding musical vision; an expression of profound spiritual faith set to some of the densest and heaviest reggae grooves ever recorded.

Almost as remarkable as the music itself is the exclusivity and rarity of the tracks contained within - I'm only familiar with 6 of these rhythms, and even then these are different versions. For example, both "LAZY MOOD" and "OPEN YOUR HEART" are new-to-me versions of "Conquering Lion"; "Lazy Mood" is an organ-led cut and "Open Your Heart" features horns and percolating percussion.
Even the version of "DELIVER ME FROM MY ENEMIES" contained here, a definitive roots anthem which has been released several times (and even featured in the popular film "Babylon") offers new revelations - Yabby's impassioned prayer in the last 30 seconds are louder and clearer in the mix than ever before. I've finally deciphered the entire thing after years of listening! "DELIVER ME" is followed directly by its dub version, the song I was most interested in hearing since I learned about this compilation. Blood & Fire released a dub version 6 years ago but it featured annoying and intrusive snippets of nursery-rhyme deejay chat.

As the Yabby You music's spiritual credits are impeccable, I will risk sounding snooty by instead addressing certain technical flaws with this cd release.

Seldom a reggae reissue company with the best vinyl copies available, Pressure Sounds nevertheless has released plenty of good and hard or even impossible-to-find music. Having a still intact vinyl collection bought back in the 70s I do, however, sometimes despair at the degradation of sound quality heard on these reissues. The companies seem desperate in their attempts to sanitize crackly Jamaican vinyl for the supposedly fussy digital generation.

You may buy this A/ if you have a cheap stereo and don't know what I am talking about or B/ out of kindness, in order to support Yabby You's widow (at least the booklet says she was involved).

Here's a breakdown of the contents, I could not sit through the 59 minutes but instead started comparing with stuff in my collection. It turns out this CD contains quite a few tracks that are not so rare after all... I prefix with a plus or minus and a subjective opinion on the sound restoration. Sadly, some of the selling points of the CD (the few vocal tracks) have been too severely "restored."

-1. Unenjoyable smear! Awful colouring due to too aggressively set crackle and noise reduction
-2. B side - ditto
-3. Apparently same mix as "Give Praises" on Grove LP "Beware Dub" (thus no "exclusive dub plate mix" - it's been widely available, first on LP and then courtesy Blood & Fire's work on the Yabby You material!)
-4. The label may say "Prophets" but it's a Bunny Lee production; tune on the 1976 Klik LP "Tears on My Pillow" with crystal clear sound.
