I picked up this book while browsing and, just flicking through a few pages, was gripped. It combines real life stories of survival with intelligent analysis of human behaviour and insights from neuroscience, philosophy and psychology. It seeks to understand and illustrate what motivates the minds and bodies of individuals to persevere against extraordinary odds and, in doing so, provides insights into what makes for a fully lived life. It's a practical book, packed with facts, quotations and references. It's also extremely inspiring and moving. I'll certainly be reading it again.
