4.0 out of 5 stars Risen....the next Gothic ( obvious really ) 9 Oct 2009
Platform for Display:Xbox 360
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I'm playing this on 360. Graphics are a tad blurry at all times except when up close to people. Frame rate suffers occasionally, but not often.

Other than that, if you want a deep and very tough RPG ( essentially similar to any of the Gothics , and a tad like Two Worlds ) then this is the game. I'm thoroughly enjoying it, and if you liked any of the previous mentioned games, you'll love this.

The gameplay is very unforgiving and a serious challenge, but hit lvl 6 and you start getting your own back...big time.

Combat is engaging and fun and the voice acting is totally regionalised for the UK, with a bunch of gruff sounding northern and london accents that come out with some very funny lines. In fact, almost " Lock stock and two smoking barrels" gangster talk. Very good.

Anyway, ignore the naysayers who have given Risen naff reviews, if you like Gothic or Two Worlds then this is for you. If you really must have the top end graphics, then buy the PC version and make sure you have a rocking pc.

Alternately, buy the Xbox version, install it to the HD , & enjoy the game from your sofa on your 42 or 50 inch plasma, and screw the folks who moan, and just enjoy the spirit of the game.

Hugs

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent game but needs a lot of patience 5 Oct 2009
Platform for Display:Xbox 360
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Like one of the ealier reviewers, after about 3 hours I was very dissapointed and ready to trade this in but I decided to persevere and now Im beginning to appreciate what a good game it is.Ive now played about 17 hours and Im now a "hunter" with some cool looking armour and weapons. Sure the graphics are dissapointing initially but after a while you become so immersed in the game that you dont notice them as much. What I like about the game is its realism. You start of as a castaway with nothing but the clothes on your back and you have to slowly work and fight your way through a gritty and often brutal world. It doesnt just throw masses of weapons and armour at you like other RPGs so every piece of armour you get you earn just like in real life. You therefore end up appreciating every single item you have rather then constantly upgrading to every shiny new piece of armour. You also learn real life skills(my favourite is "gut animal") when you completely dismember an animal youve hunted to increase its trade value. Also the dialogue is very good with a lot of adult humour( Definitely NOT for under 16s).
It however has a lot of flaws as others have already mentioned. The user interface is very awkward and unintuitive. The map controls are poor. When you first start the game you feel very underpowered and die a lot which can be very frustrating and the graphics are below average. If you are somehow able to overlook all this there is a rewarding gaming experience to be had. At a time when games average 5-10 hours this will last you 60+ hours.
Ill finish by saying its a bit like marmite, you either love it or hate it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old school RPG 2 Aug 2011
Platform for Display:Xbox 360
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I bought Risen because the video for the sequel looked interesting. The game plays like a bit of a throwback, but in a good way. The graphics arent the best for a next gen console, but the game has everything you would expect from a rpg. The story is pretty good, but never really explains your character, and the voice acting is original. Worth a look if you have some time between game releases if you like rpgs.

4.0 out of 5 stars So good, you'll forgive its many flaws 5 Nov 2010
By Pearnon
Platform for Display:Xbox 360
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Yes, the graphics are sub-par. Yes, the gameplay is counter-intuitive and clunky. Yes, the font size requires a big HD screen so you won't go blind from playing this game. So why should you do it?

Simply put, because in the end it's worth it. If you manage to overcome the initial disappointment that comes from beholding what seems to be a shoddy product and soldier on for a while, you'll find yourself deeply immersed in this game, because that's what it is: Risen in an immersive, old-school RPG, and before long it really begins to shine. It has creative quests, nice ways to interact with the environment via spells, good voice acting with some big-name talent on the credits list, and for all its shortcomings, still manages to make you feel like part of the world through menial tasks such as cooking, smithing and, yes, woodcutting. You'll find that the island of Faranga has been painstakingly crafted on all levels - doing an excellent job of portraying the contrasting human hand in a savage, untamed place - and the developer's eye for detail does not go unnoticed.

While there's no doubt that the PC version is superior, I still wholeheartedly reccomend this game for Xbox owners who enjoy RPGs. It's a long (60+ hours), fun, immersive experience that you won't regret.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rises aboves the rest. 19 Oct 2009
Platform for Display:Xbox 360
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Intro...
The combat is very annoying at first, locking on to enemies does not work - if they sidestep away from you the lock breaks and so you can't defend their next attack. Fighting multiple enemies too can be fiddly. Once you start to upgrade your fighting skills though, it does get better, so stick with it!

Levelling up is a very annoying feature to begin with. Each time you 'level up' through experience you gain learning points. These learning points then have to be spent on a trainer - who will train you up in things like Sword fighting, Sneaking, Pickpocketing etc. However, you also have to pay gold with this. This means in the early stages you will be gaining plenty of levels - but you don't have enough gold to raise your level, even though you have the learning points. By the time you're on the 2nd chapter this is fine, as you have more than enough money, but it can be frustrating to begin with.

Graphics...
The weakest part of this game. The developers Piranha Bytes actually handed over the 360 'port' to another company. And it shows. The most similar game I can think of is Two Worlds. Now Two Worlds was released in 2007, and even back then it looked poor!

Technical backbone...
There are many glitches in the 360 version, pop up will happen at times. The game is also very dark at night. Some may say this is like real life, but computer games are meant to be fun, I shouldn't have to go to sleep in the early evening in the game because you can't see anymore...

Story...
The game is split into 4 chapters, and after 20 hours solid I'm on the 3rd chapter. The story is actually quite different from others, and is very engrossing.
