Fun:
Like one of the ealier reviewers, after about 3 hours I was very dissapointed and ready to trade this in but I decided to persevere and now Im beginning to appreciate what a good game it is.Ive now played about 17 hours and Im now a "hunter" with some cool looking armour and weapons. Sure the graphics are dissapointing initially but after a while you become so immersed in the game that you dont notice them as much. What I like about the game is its realism. You start of as a castaway with nothing but the clothes on your back and you have to slowly work and fight your way through a gritty and often brutal world. It doesnt just throw masses of weapons and armour at you like other RPGs so every piece of armour you get you earn just like in real life. You therefore end up appreciating every single item you have rather then constantly upgrading to every shiny new piece of armour. You also learn real life skills(my favourite is "gut animal") when you completely dismember an animal youve hunted to increase its trade value. Also the dialogue is very good with a lot of adult humour( Definitely NOT for under 16s).
It however has a lot of flaws as others have already mentioned. The user interface is very awkward and unintuitive. The map controls are poor. When you first start the game you feel very underpowered and die a lot which can be very frustrating and the graphics are below average. If you are somehow able to overlook all this there is a rewarding gaming experience to be had. At a time when games average 5-10 hours this will last you 60+ hours.
Ill finish by saying its a bit like marmite, you either love it or hate it.

I'm playing this on 360. Graphics are a tad blurry at all times except when up close to people. Frame rate suffers occasionally, but not often.

Other than that, if you want a deep and very tough RPG ( essentially similar to any of the Gothics , and a tad like Two Worlds ) then this is the game. I'm thoroughly enjoying it, and if you liked any of the previous mentioned games, you'll love this.

The gameplay is very unforgiving and a serious challenge, but hit lvl 6 and you start getting your own back...big time.

Combat is engaging and fun and the voice acting is totally regionalised for the UK, with a bunch of gruff sounding northern and london accents that come out with some very funny lines. In fact, almost " Lock stock and two smoking barrels" gangster talk. Very good.

Anyway, ignore the naysayers who have given Risen naff reviews, if you like Gothic or Two Worlds then this is for you. If you really must have the top end graphics, then buy the PC version and make sure you have a rocking pc.

Alternately, buy the Xbox version, install it to the HD , & enjoy the game from your sofa on your 42 or 50 inch plasma, and screw the folks who moan, and just enjoy the spirit of the game.

Hugs

Risen is a slow-burner of a game that gets better as it goes on although it does demand some patience especially at first as you start out on a beach with a stick and not much of a stick at that. This is an engaging and enjoyable game that is very well written and plotted and full of interesting places to visit and quests to undertake. Don't listen to the naysayers - at a bargain price you'll get a thoroughly enjoyable game if you are prepared to make a little effort yourself. I'm very fond of it.
