Dead Island

Manufacturer's Description

If you've been dreaming about paradise, we know a place where you can make those dreams come true--the Island of Banoi. Just off the coast of Papua New Guinea, located south of the Equator and just north of Australia.

 Dead Island
Dead Island is inspired by classic zombie movies

A paradise to die for

Until very recently much of the island was wild and primitive and totally untouched by the modern world. Even though the capital, Moresby, was founded by Australian settlers in 1895, many places deep in the interior still have never been seen by western eyes.

As a guest of the Royal Palms Resort, the player's stay was supposed to be a dream holiday; a luxurious getaway to the beautiful beaches of a tropical paradise. But faced with the reality of a zombie apocalypse, there is only one thing left to do: Survive.

This is Dead Island... a paradise to die for.

Terror. Violence. Madness.

Terror. Violence. Madness. Bedlam. A holiday paradise gone mad. A tropical island turns into total chaos after a mysterious zombie outbreak. Cut off from the rest of the world, the player’s only chance to survive is to fight to the death and find a way to escape from the island.

Dead Island combines first-person action with a heavy focus on melee combat, character development and customisation of a vast array of weapons. All of these gameplay features are presented in a dark story inspired by classic zombie movies with a gritty and engrossing campaign that can be played with up to four players in co-op mode.

Set in an open world tropical island, hordes of different festering zombies await players around every corner while they embark on a variety of thrilling missions through the holiday resort. With firearms and ammunition being scarce the player must rely on utilising found items as weapons for self-defence and fight off zombie hordes in intense melee combat. A diverse range of items can be collected and will later serve to transform the player’s ordinary makeshift weapons into serious instruments of destruction.

In addition to satisfying even the most bloodthirsty action fan’s fantasy, Dead Island also features role-playing elements which allow the player to develop one of the game’s unique character classes according to their preferences, all the while learning new skills and fresh tactics during their journey through the perilous environments of the island. What’s more, anytime during a game up to four players can seamlessly join together and experience the intense combat and immersive story with cooperative gameplay.

With the all-new Chrome Engine 5 powering Dead Island, the game will use the latest installment of Techland’s acclaimed proprietary game engine, allowing the player to experience the tropical island paradise in graphical splendour with diverse environments like lush forests and detailed city environments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why i almost missed this game 7 May 2012

I almost didn't buy this game because i'm a fool that sometimes believes in other people bad reviews, that's why! Bought it for 19 pounds here at amazon.uk and i'm very happy with this purchase. I would have paid paid the full price for it and i would have bought it day one only if i paid less attention to others. I will not review it; it's a fps with rpg elements in an open world with lot's of quests and side quests.Last time i was so delighted with a game in this generation, it was with the first uncharted (with a campaign). It's not about inovation or about some game flaws (tell me a game without flaws); it's about fun and this game is all about it. If you like zombies, gore, fps, this game is for you! Well, i have to go kill some more zombies...

4.0 out of 5 stars Give it a go, you won't be dissapionted 21 Jun. 2013

I'm a little late in the day playing this game and almost didn't bother. I picked it up nice and cheap but after a few hours playing time I would have paid the full release price.

If you like simple fairly easy missions with easy to follow maps a long with smashing the hell out of Zombies then you will love it. Each mission is different and you will explore the whole Island.

It can get a little bit frustrating when the Zombies keep re-spawning but after a while your weapons are so good that you simply want to chop their heads off with all your different array of weapons! There are many many side missions that keep the game interesting along the way.

As you get further into the game the Zombies get more mutated and harder to kill but hey it's all part of the fun. It's a simple game and does make you jump out of your seat a few times or maybe it's just me being a wossy. It's a fun game with a few glitches, like all of the characters appearing in the cut scenes although you're the only character in the game. Enjoy the game but just don't expect to much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Game opinions and ratings 25 April 2012

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
After reading many mixed reviews I took a chance on this game, something's I wondered about the game weren't answered in anyone else reviews.

This game is very fun to play so long as you have someone to play it with. I am not too keen on the game playing it alone as the amount of zombies you go against do not change. As a solo player you would expect less enemies in comparison to playing with more people, however this is not the case. You will have to adjust to getting killed. However still a fun game even as a solo!

The game as a co-op is probably my favourite game. Those that are concerned about not having a friend to play with you can connect with people, in the setting menu you can have up to three people connect apart from you (four in total) However if choosing to join someone you must have completed the prologue which must be done as a solo player. You will know the prologue is over when you kill your first set of zombies and the screen says "Act 1" . When able to join others pick players with the same chapter. When varying in chapters some progress will not be saved. If at the same chapter get about, experiment and slaughter and search for fun items. Rewards will be gained through playing after an hour you will feel at home.

* Gameplay Storyline - Strange story, often confusing but if mixing in with little side quests it doesn't matter, all you want to do is slice up zombies ---- 7.5/10
* Fun Factor - As a solo 7/10 --- as a co-op 9.5/10
* Durability and length - Not short however not to long if you do the side quest this will keep you entertained for ages.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overrated 29 Mar. 2013

Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
Dead Island has a few good qualities which make it worth a look at a knockdown price if you're into zombie-bashing, but don't expect too much from it.

The combat is quite fun (at first) as it's much more up close and personal than most zombie games (using mainly melee weapons rather than guns). And customising items and then trying them out on the zombies is genuinely quite entertaining.

The downside is that the story is fairly tedious, you don't care about any of the characters and it becomes a real grind having to take down so many zombies or run from area to area trying to keep away from them. And the game is seriously violent - definitely not for the faint hearted! That would probably be fine if it had a really engaging story, but in this case it just feels a bit grim and depressing after a while. Not exactly what I look for in a game...

So in short, it's a reasonably well made title with some interesting ideas, but after a while it all just gets a bit boring and takes itself a bit too seriously.

I nearly did't get this game because of the bad reviews but im glad i did. dead island is amazingly addictive fun and maybe its just me but it gets quite scary at points. it reminds me a little bit like a res game with the different mutations of zombies. i had to download a patch as soon as i put the disk in so im guessing thats why i havent experienced any glitches that people were reporting.

try it for yourself im sure you will love it
