I have to be brutally honest, when I bought this book it was purely because it was featured on the Tv programme LOST, I had no idea what it was about or what to expect. Now I am so glad that I didn't, as it was just a lovely surprise.

The book centres on a group of Japenese tourists, who all journey to India for reasons which are revelaed to us in individual flashback chapters. It is a beautiful story detailing life and death, focusing on differnt interpreatations of faith and how each characters deals with their problems or feelings of emptiness in life.

Well worth buying, I won't spoil any more of it for you.

A group of Japanese tourists in India converge at Varanasi on the Ganges. Each is searching for some meaning to their life.
Isobe has lost his wife to cancer after 35 years of marriage, a period during which he largely ignored her, and has difficulty in coming to terms with the grief that he is now feeling.
Kiguchi is tormented by his memories of the war, these take on a new aspect after having found out the full extent of the sacrifice that his friend (who dies from cirrhosis) had undergone to save them both while on the "Highway of death" in Burma.
Numada, a writer of children's stories, is recovering from critical illness and diverse operations and has spent two years hospitalized.
Mitsuko who behind her caring facade during her volunteer work in hospital is a cynical woman who is completely incapable of loving others and feels an inner emptiness.
Otsu who in the past has been the butt of Mitsuko's cruel interest is a catholic seminarian whose vision of christianity is not in line with the Church.
Each arrives at an answer or action that brings them peace of mind.
We also meet the Sanjos, a newly wed couple who are completely disinterested in the society that surrounds them in India, and the disillusioned guide Enami who accompanies the group of Japanese.

Wonderful novel.

This is my first encounter with Endo. I didn't know what to expect. This is a novel of deep and raw humanity. At first I was prepared to get a sort of lesson about what Endo thinks about religion, as though it would be woven in a way to manipulate, I was very wrong. He provides the questions and heart-ache that affect each of us and offers a story for answer, each character unique and with their own hang ups and issues, each given a chance to be redeemed. There is no sense of being manipulated or preached at, it is very personal, it is very real and it is very inter-personal as well. We are humanity. If you let it, this book will get inside you, tear you apart and then again, if you let it, offer deep grace.
