Synopsis
Aboard the luxury liner Argonautica, a mysterious and deadly presence makes mincemeat of vacationing passengers, leaving only a handful of terrified survivors adrift at sea. Enter a mercenary sailor and his crew, who board the ship in hopes of pilfering its riches--but instead find themselves the strange monster's next prey. Goofy fun from the director of THE MUMMY.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incident at Sea..., 23 Sep 2005
By Milt Ingarfield "milt_fm" (Arbroath, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
In 1998 before Stephen Sommers had his world -wide hit with his re-make of "The Mummy" he wrote and directed this action horror thriller set in the South China seas, where a gang of criminals hire a ship's captain his crew and boat to take them to a certain point in the ocean, little does the captain know they intend to meet a luxury liner called "Argoautica" and unknown to him they going to rob the vessel but by the time they get there something has beaten them to it, the ship has become a floating house of horrors where the surviving passengers and crew are scared to move as whatever came aboard hasn't left.

The captain of the boat is played by Treat Williams (The Devil's own) a passenger on the liner is played by Famke Janssen (Goldeneye) a couple of the criminals are played by Djimon Hounsou (Amstad) and Jason Flemyng (Lock stock and 2 smoking barrels)

This film has some genuine jump out of your seat moments and some excellent surround sound effects and the director borrows from various films such as "Jaws" and "The African Queen" a great movie to curl up on the couch with the partner of your choice and some popcorn, disengage your brain and let the film wash over you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must see MONSTER film !!!, 24 Jul 2004
This film is a must see If you like gore horror and suspense. 15 is the right rating because there is only a bit of bad language and gore and violence. Anyone who has seen this film will think twice about going on a big cruise ship and going into deep waters. I mean who woudn't be scared to death of massive sucky tentacles things that drink you alive and then spit out the bloody carcus. The acting in the film is pretty poor but the actual film and effects like the elevator going down into that hall of blood and bones is awesome and makes up for the acting. Overall this is a great film and a good one to buy because you would watch it over and over again and not get bored.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll never look at calamari the same way again..., 14 Jan 2004
By A Customer
This is a pretty short movie, about 1 and 3/4 hours, but it manages to fit in all the content without seeming rushed/cramped. I think the 15 rating is sensible - I read a review stating it was gory enough to be an 18 with ease, but once I'd watched it, I realised I'd been worried over nothing. The 'gore' is mainly blood, and the worst you'll see is the half-digested dude who is still up and about. Well, for about 5 seconds anyway.

When it gets down to it, Deep Rising is essentially a comedy. Okay, so a lot of people die horribly, but even in the sickest deaths, there's an underlaying of (albeit morbid) humour, such as when the lady gets yanked down the toilet in a spray of blood. See? Blood = horror, toilet = comedy. What a way to die. There are many great one-liners (Pantucci's nervous "I'm feelin' a real lack of love here..." when faced with an angry bunch of pirates or whatever they are), which are even present when the characters are in the most dangerous situations, just to remind you there's a funny side to giant tentacle things dealing out painful deaths. Obviously.

The actors here are all suitable for the role. Treat Williams is actually a lot better than most reviews say about him, and Famke Janssen is the token sexy female (other than poor Una Damon who ends up tentacle-chow). The pirates are led by... I think Wes Studi. Forgive me, but I don't know much about him, so I'll just stick with saying he and his posse were okay. My favourite actor, Kevin J. O'Connor (not the only reason I bought the DVD, okay?) is hilarious and does what he went on to do in The Mummy - steal just about every scene he's in, which is rather a lot, happily. XD

In all, Stephen Sommers has created a rare little jewel; a horror/comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously and is better for it. Laughable, bloody fun that gets to the action fast and doesn't slow down. A scary monster, overall good cast and some witty lines, there's only one bad point:

You may be put off taking a cruise forever.

Take care, JJ
