First off, if you're trying to decide between buying this Blu-ray release or Blue Underground's, let me save you the trouble and tell you to go for the Blue Underground release.
While 98 percent of this Arrow release is great, it has a few fatal flaws that are just dealbreakers for me. First off, if you're watching the 126 minute director's cut, it switches often from English to Italian due to the fact that English audio was never recorded for these scenes (being that they were not in the international cut). I have no issue with this. My issue is that the film has little frame jumps when the scenes switch to the director's cut material. The transitions are marked by little frame skips and seeing as the Blue Underground release does not suffer from this issue, it is pretty annoying. The Blue Underground release has seamless transitions between the director's cut scenes. No jumps. It should be noted that this set contains a second disc with the international cut on it. Since the director's cut material is not present in this version, the frame jumps are absent. However, this Arrow release also has a picture glitch at about the 45 minute mark where a character breaks up into digital blocks for a brief second, and this glitch is present on both versions of the film. It's so fleeting that it doesn't detract from the experience too much, but again, knowing that this doesn't happen on the Blue Underground release makes it annoying.
The rest of the movie looks excellent and mostly on par with the Blue Underground release (I own both). The sound is also just fantastic and the Goblin score really booms from the speakers like never before. I only wish these picture issues didn't exist and then Arrow would have a fabulous release on their hands here. But as it is, if you're going to plop down money for an HD release of this film, you may as well spend it wisely and go with the version that doesn't suffer from these little errors. I'm sorry, Arrow. I like many of your releases, but I can't side with you on this one and the consumer should go with the version that doesn't suffer from these glitches. After all, why pay for something subpar when a better alternative exists?
The three stars here are for the uncorrupted parts of the feature and for the top notch packaging.
