Amazon.co.uk Review
An obvious attempt to cash in on the success of Jaws, this 1977 thriller was also based on a best-seller by Peter Benchley, and it features a memorable performance by Robert Shaw (the doomed shark hunter in Jaws) in one of the last roles of his career. Looking very tanned and healthy, Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset play a young couple enjoying a tropical vacation who discover a glass ampoule while scuba diving off the coast of Bermuda. It takes a seasoned treasure hunter (Shaw) to identify the ampoule as part of a valuable shipment of World War II morphine lost at sea, coincidentally, atop the even greater treasure of a sunken Spanish galleon. Thus begins a race for drugs and treasure pitting Nolte, Bisset and Shaw against a ruthless drug lord (Louis Gossett Jr) who will do anything--even resort to Haitian voodoo--to get what he wants. It's all rather contrived and exploitative (after all, the movie's best known for Bisset's wet T-shirt scuba-dive), but as escapist entertainment goes it's got some exciting highlights including a moray eel that attacks on cue and... well, uh, Jacqueline Bisset in a wet T-shirt. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Sunken Pleasure, 17 Dec 2008
By G. R. Donaldson (Great Britain) - See all my reviews

I read the book before seeing the film and it translates very well. The pre CGI underwater sequences are amazing. I wholly agree with the reviewer that liked the Donna Summer theme song. Unfortunately its not on her Greatest Hits Album. No idea why perhaps it was released on another label. Robert Shaw made this after starring in the Scarlet Buccaneer and Jaws. He totally convinces as the salty old sea dog with treasure in his veins.Whilst not as succesful as the latter this film stands up well on its own. I highly recomend it. The Deep was also an interesting change of direction for Nick Nolte, as he is seldom seen in frothy adventure yarns like this.So a nice warming watch on a cold winters night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb escapist stuff!!, 19 Dec 2001

There is no doubt that this film came out on the back of "Jaws" which of course was a great success but this is such an under-rated film. The diving sequences with Bissett and Nolte are superb(and was in the days when everyone dived with a single cylinder!!) and Robert Shaw puts in a great performance as the rum-drinking treasure hunter.

As well as the actors, this film also made the wreck of the "Rhone" in the British Virgin Islands famous.

I loved the film back in the '70s when it first came out(when I was a boy) and I love it now. Go out and buy it....and escape to adventure, piracy and treasure hunting!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great movie, 21 Feb 2007

Like the above review I first saw this movie when I was a kid. I saw it on the big screen which made the underwater scenes even better. Wish they would bring it out at the movies again for a trip down memory lane. Definetely worth the price of a ticket, or in this case well worth the purchase price of the DVD.
I've watched this movie many times over the years. I have also read the book many times and have the theme tune by Donna Summer. I'm a bit of a fan. Watch it and you will be too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top notch sea set adventure
Contrived or not, this is a darn good yarn, and there is much more time spent at sea here than there was in Jaws. Read more
