A great big rock hits the earth, and lots of people die. That's pretty much all there is to Deep Impact, and most of that was in the trailer. Can a major Hollywood movie really squeak by with such a slender excuse for a premise? The old disaster-movie king, cheese-meister Irwin Allen (The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake), would have made a kitsch classic out of this, with Charlton Heston, rather than a resigned and mumbly Robert Duvall, as the veteran astronaut who risks several lives trying to blow up the comet that's headed right this way! As stiffly directed by Mimi Leder, this thick slice of ham errs on the side of solemnity. It may be the most earnest end-of-the-world picture since Stanley Kramer's atomic-doom drama On the Beach. There are a couple of classic melodramatic flourishes: an estranged father and daughter who share a tearful reconciliation as a Godzilla-sized tidal wave looms on the horizon; and an astronaut, communicating on video with his loved ones back on Earth, who follows whispered instructions from a buddy lurking just off camera--so that his little girl won't realise that he's been struck blind. Deep Impact stars Morgan Freeman as the president of the United States. --David Chute

5.0 out of 5 stars An intelligent disaster movie 1 Jan 2009
Its rather interesting that both Deep Impact and Armageddon were released around the same time because the two films deal with the same subject matter but in vastly different ways. While Jerry Bruckheimer gives us Con Air In Space, Mimi Leder takes a more considered approach to the threat of human extinction by chosing to concentrate on how exactly many of us would respond to the idea of the end of the world. Characters are fleshed out, warts and all. If one didn't already know this was a film about a giant meteor heading towards earth and knew about as much as the reporter who wants to uncover why 'ELLE' is such a closely guarded govermnment secret it is entirely plausible that events would unfurl as portrayed in this film.

I prefer films that do not try to insult my intelligence, like Armageddon with its over-the-top posturing macho nonsense. Deep Impact tells its story simply and intelligently. Morgan Freeman gives a magnificent performance as the President, a kind of mature version of Barak Obama. Robert Duvall is brilliant as the seasoned old astronaut pilot giving the young guns a lessson in seat-of-the-pants piloting. Tea Leoni, all inner turmoil and uncertainty until the end, is actually rather an inspired choice as a young ambitious reporter who suddenly realises that pulitzer prize fame is not the goal that she craves the most. And Elijah Wood plays the geeky kid from average family in average town USA who helps discover the comet that is hurtling towards Earth.

Deep Impact is a moving film, about hope, crushing disappointment and ultimately redemption. Its the sort of movie that the Americans occasionally get right. More often than not we get Armageddon, which is why the contrast between the two films is so fascinating.

4.0 out of 5 stars Joe-shmo Blu-Ray review, not movie 27 Nov 2009
This is a pre-release review of the disc before it goes out on general sale, based on the HMV exclusive released earlier this month. I'll skip over the review of the film itself as most of you thinking of buying this will be upgrading from the DVD or video release.
So onto the important stuff..:

First off is the Blu-ray picture, and I must say this is one of the best Blu-ray images I have seen in a long time. At times the definition is so sharp there is that "often-mentioned-but-all-too-rare" 3D effect, most noticeably in the exterior shots. Everything shines brightly in the heavily lit scenes with no grain evident and the darker scenes have good blacks and very low levels of artefacting or grain to annoy. If I have any complaints, the outstanding picture shows up the occasional naff bit of CGI. The tidal wave is now just a little underwhelming compared to the rest of the film. But this is a minor gripe and a massive improvement over the DVD releases as to be almost a completely different movie. (The information Amazon has on the ratio is incorrect; it is the proper 2.35:1 ratio). Picture: 5/5

The audio isn't such a big improvement over the DVD. While the sound space is filled reasonably well by the Dolby TrueHD track, oddly I had to put an audio delay of around 40msecs to ensure the sound synced with the image (I haven't had to do that before). The bass is a little meatier than the original DVD, but you really won't be using this disc as a demo for your audio equipment. Audio: 3/5

The extras are basic and have been taken from earlier discs. Only the trailers are in HD and serves to frustrate what could have been a good disc extras-wise.

5.0 out of 5 stars the "other" impact movie.... 3 Jan 2012
this was the "other" impact movie. It was more story-led, had better acting and better photography. It had to compete with the mega-hollywood Bruce Willis version but it won in as many areas as it lost. Great sous-terrain plot and casting. Superb Blu-ray transfer but not perfect. Acceptable audio. Could have been ruined in many places by over-egging the obvious but reigned in the egos and the result is a great film. has to be 5 stars for sheer scale of the story and deliverance.

I gigantic comet is heading towards Earth, if it hits then life as we know it is doomed. Enter the president of the United States who launches a desperate plan to have NASA's finest blow up the comet before it gets here. In the meantime, all on the Earth prepare for the worst case scenario.

Deep Impact was always going to be a tough sell to the movie watching world. In spite of its best intentions to blend epic disaster with a great big human heart, Deep Impact neither appeased the sci-fi crowd or fulfilled the effects hungry popcorn brigade's gargantuan appetites. "Too talky" said one side of the cinema, "that's just ridiculous" said the other, "hey isn't this supposed to be a corny disaster film" asked the balcony, here in lays the problem. Director Mimi Leder and her writing team of Bruce Rubin and Michael Tolkin are guilty of not taking a side from which to launch their picture out of the mundane atmosphere. Or perhaps maybe, it was just a bold gamble that didn't pay off? but i'm sure nobody involved in the picture would have wanted the viewers to be hankering for the effects laden finale, and that's what happens, ultimately it's the so-so carnage that most end up remembering. Worst still is that outside of Téa Leoni's news lady central character, Jenny Lerner, no characters are fully formed to make us even care if they and the Earth actually survives. Which in a film pro porting to be an intimate study of relationships and how mankind copes with impending doom, is nearly unforgivable.

It's odd that in the same year as Bruce Willis and Michael Bay firmly went for the popcorn crowd with Armageddon, that Deep Impact was offered up as the thinking mans opposite side of the coin.
