Very poor indeed! 12 Jan 2006
By N. Brett TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Coonts: I’ve written a plot on the back of a beer-mat.
Publisher: Fantastic, we will give it to someone else to write, but put your name on the cover so people think it is you! We will make a mint.
Punter (me): Ooh a new Coonts book, I’ll buy that!…….

This is horrible. Based on a Coonts premise but written by Jim DeFelice, this is very weak. The idea is that a high tech element of the NSA are fighting the bad guys with cutting edge technology supported by sharp young agents in the field. It doesn’t work, partly because the writing is poor, but also because the blend of technology and very irritating characters do not gel.

There is a weak plot about Russia and a potential assassination, but long before the end you don’t care any more. Avoid.

Its a fairly standard techno/spy thriller type book, with nothing new or unique to make it stand out.

This time the NSA provide the characters and the tech to solve a world-threatening (read that as a threat to America) problem. The characters are ok, story moves along well and a few interesting twists which keep you interested.

This gets three stars as it is neither excellent nor rubbish, but somewhere in the middle. If you are a fan of this genre then you would enjoy it, if not, then its probably best avoided.

This was my second Coonts book and it was not a decepcion. The story focus on international intrigue and a secret squadron of the NSA which has high-tech gear to support their missions.
They accidentally discover a plot to overthrow the Russian President but it all turns out very differently in the end of the book.
An enjoyable read.
