good book but... 7 Jan 2010
By Dehna
Format:Paperback
Every other book I've seen reviewed on-line uses square paper for boxes.
So I ordered this book and 2 x paper.
Book arrived today, and inside there's a number of boxes that use rectangle paper.
They should have said that. :)
So if you order it, be sure to get some rectangle paper also!

Other than that, nice boxes, easy to understand, fun to make.

Impressive results 16 July 2009
By C. C. Chivers VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I prefer this book to 'Fabulous origami boxes' because the instructions are better. I was a little confused with one of them which is the same in both books, but in the 'Fabulous' book the bottom part was missing.

I would say this is a good book to get one started with as the instructions are clear and reasonably simple, although the diagrams can be a little confusing sometimes, so use some logic. Then buy the 'Fabulous' book for more once you have the basics.

Excellent book for the Low Price 7 Jan 2008
By DonB! - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Being interested in origami boxes, and seeing the low $5.95 price for this book, I bought it. I am not at all disappointed. It teaches 18 boxes w/variations, ranging from very easy to intermediate level.

For beginners, Rick teaches the Nik-Nak Box (from 8.5"x11" paper), The Printer's Box and Harbin's Box-In-One ( a small square box with a lid from one piece of paper). He moves on to the A4 Thin Box (again, from an 8.5"x11" paper), which is a long skinny box with a lid, all from one piece of paper. From there he moves on to teach Boxes w/Lids, Boxes w/Dividers, the Flower Box, a Shell Shaped Box, a Heart Shaped Box, the Peace Crane Box, a Triangle Box with a Rose on top, and my latest favorite, due to its simplicity, the "Pacchetto Regalo box", one that closes onto itself and locks, all from one paper piece. He finishes the book by teaching a 5-sided box, complete with 3 lid variations. All in all, this book is a deal for the small amount of $$$ it costs.

Not boxes I would tend to make again 18 Nov 2008
By Mary Jo Sminkey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm a big fan of making origami boxes, and have many of Tomoko Fuse's books on them like Origami Boxes and Fabulous Origami Boxes. So I couldn't pass up another book on boxes particularly at such a low price! But I was rather disappointed in the boxes that this book included. First, most of these are boxes folded from a single piece of paper. While these are kind of neat just to show off, it just does not result in a box with the kind of structural integrity that the modular style of boxes that Fuse does...and that really are necessary to actually use the box for anything. It also makes it far more difficult to make larger boxes...both in terms of getting paper that is large enough, and also increasing the problem of a strong structure to hold up to items in the box. There also were a lot of models using A4 rather than square paper, a size that is not readily available in the US. I'm never that fond of having to cut my square paper which is of course what most origami paper comes as. Having said that, the boxes are diagrammed well enough and I had no problem for the most part following the directions. I just didn't get boxes at the end that I would have much interest in making again.

Poor Instructions, lacks detail 2 July 2010
By Elizabeth A. Pilla - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've been doing origami off and on for many years, it's great for relaxation. I have about 8 books and of them, this book is the worst. The ideas and projects are great, but the authors descriptions and illustrations are severely lacking. While I consider myself somewhere in the middle as far as skill level is concerned and I should have had no problems following the progression of moves. However, I found myself completely lost on several occasions and reading and rereading the same section over and over again trying to figure out what I missed. It wasn't me. It was as if the book was written for people who all ready know how to do the specified project and just needed a refresher. It seems that the author and illustrator forgot that they weren't writting for themselves but for the general public most of whom would be novices. The illustrations are poor and seem to completely skip steps at times. Pair that with the muddy directions and this book leaves alot to be desired. I don't recommend it to anyone who only does origami occasionaly, or if you have little patience. There are much better books out there. The way I figure it, you really need to know what you're doing to figure out what they're doing in this book, and if you're good enough to do that, then you don't need the book ;)
