Decorative Mosaics 6 Oct 2010
By frankie
Format:Paperback
A classic case of 'doing what it says on the tin', this book gives you all the information you need to start making mosaic. It is excellent for beginners. It's projects include items such as decorated planting pots, wall panels, floor panels and a decorated paving stone for outdoors. The basic methods for these items are then easily adapted for your own ideas.
The instructions are clear, the illustrations are very good, and the projects are simple but not so simple that you wouldn't want to do them. I found it to be quite inspirational. It contains a photographic list of tools you will need and some addresses for suppliers, although I found I had to do a good bit of digging myself on the internet to find stuff.

This book is a bit of a disspoinment, there are only one or two designs that I like/would choose to use. So in my view it is not woth paying full price/top price for this book. Plus there are no patterns - only images/pictures of hand drawn sketchs done by the author, so you have to really visually the scale and size yourself. I have had other books that i like more and would rate more highly.

Good, but not the best 17 Mar 2000
By Lynnsey Skliros - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a good book for beginning mosaicists. It follows the usual format - history, techniques & materials, gallery, projects.

I recommend it because it covers all of these topics quite well, it's well laid out and it's more affordable than many similar books.

However.

I bought this book because I admire Elaine Goodwin's work, so I was disappointed that only about half of the projects feature her designs.

I was annoyed to find that of the 4 pieces on the cover, only 2 are projects - the other 2 are from the gallery. That's a bit like false advertising IMO.

Finally, the designs/templates used in the projects are not clear and easy to use - in some cases they're no more than fuzzy photographs of pencil sketches. Perhaps the author doesn't want us to slavishly follow her designs, but for someone who can't draw it's frustrating.

Finally (and now I'm really splitting hairs) the list of requirements for each project is badly presented, squashed into a little box although there's plenty of space on the page. A case of design conquering usability I guess.

This book has 12 projects that they show how to make. Step by step on most projects, and these projects are actually "do-able" from a beginner standpoint.
