Technology and construction had been enervated by research during the war and these discoveries could now be applied in peacetime. The popularization of plastics, fiberglass, and latex literally shaped the decade. Rising incomes and postwar rebuilding on bother sides of the Atlantic led to a massive housing boom in both the suburbs and inner cities, and these new homes reflected the new style. While European design was extraordinarily inventive, American design was looking to an idealized vision of the future - between them a modern idiom was developed that can be seen vividly on these pages. This overview of the decade includes the work of such famous innovators as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Hans Wegner, and Gio Ponti.
About the Author
Charlotte J. and Peter M. Fiell run a design consultancy in London specializing in the sale, acquisition, study and promotion of design artifacts. They have lectured widely, curated a number of exhibitions, and written numerous articles and books on design and designers, including TASCHEN's 1000 Lights, 1000 Chairs, Design of the 20th Century, Industrial Design A-Z, Designing the 21st Century, and Scandinavian Design.

This book is a must to have for everyone who loves modern design and architecture. The book gives you a guide to the decorative art of the 50s: the furnitures, livingrooms settings, tabelwares, ceramics, textiles, lightning etc. and the part I like best the houses and apartments.

Really nice book packed full of photos form the period, not many in colour but thats due to the age of the photos. Very good reference book.

This is a great resource for any serious lover of the style & design of the 1950's; you won't regret adding this volume to your collection. This is not a coffee table pretty picture book though; many of the images are small B&W, there's lots of text, and whilst I love it, it won't interest the casual observer.
