I profess to not being a great fan of TV personalities/celebs on the whole, but then have a sneaky liking for House Gift, a little jem of a programme which totally warmed me to LLB for many reasons. He came across as not only as extremely personable, but very perceptive of other people and their home needs (even if they aren't always aware of them themselves). Added to this he has an Fine Art training, which gives him the formal and visual awareness to understand the rules of design, knowledge of art and design movements and well, just that sheer sense of joyousness which makes him and his ideas so delightful.
This natural charm comes across in the book, which is very witty at times, never cloying - his writing style has a directness and a freshness which make it a pleasure to read. As he so aptly says in the book, the boring beiges of the minimalist 90s have now finally gone, thank goodness, and colour and pattern and individuality are back in full force. If you're not sure where to start with redesigning your home (or just one room) to take account of this fact, here is the book and the man to help you.
What I love is that although many of the ideas are quite off the wall, they have a practicality about them as well - he thinks about how things are to be cleaned, how they'll cope with kids and animals and how furnishings and finishes will look after a few years. Especially helpful is the section at the back with notes and clear pictures of LLB showing the reader how to do things - such as put up wallpaper, hang a picture, etc, etc. This is one of the best decorating books I have come across, the blend of imaginative ideas, practicality, witty writing style and just sheer fun puts this firmly at the top of the pile.
