Product Description

The decoration of the human body is one of the oldest art forms known to man. As primitive cave paintings show, its history dates back at least 10,000 years, and it has remained with us as a means of cultural expression. This volume presents some of the finest examples of body art of the past and present, taken from all over the globe. Ranging from Australian Aborigines and the Papuans of New Guinea, via the Americas and Africa to India and the Far East, it is a voyage of discovery ending in the present-day "civilized world" with its carnival ceremonies and its made-up clowns, mimes and dancers - the remnants of a tradition which is now re-emerging in the urban western world. Anthropologists, specializing in the various geographical areas, provide commentaries to accompany the pictures which document body painting, and also the wide variety of scarring and tattooing techniques found throughout the world. Two developments in the "civilized world" - anthropological research and tourism - have left their mark on tribal life and modified cultural traditions of the past; this book is not only a documentation of historical art forms, but also an illustration of subtle processes of change and new present-day forms of artistic expression.

5.0 out of 5 stars Piercing is not a perversion, 6 Dec 2001
At last a book which gives serious academic consideration to the universal tradition of body decoration. As expected of a book based on a lifetimes research and study, Karl Groning gives us the what, the where and the when. But he also gives us the why. Too often the art of body decoration has been asociated with punks, hippies and perverts. Groning's incisive, explicatory analysis and sumpteous illustrations put body decoration squarely in the frame. If you ever had any doubts about the 'art' in body art, this book will sweep them from your mind. It provides a critique of this art form which leaves no room for argument. The aesthetics of body decoration will leave you gasping for more books by Groning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book - full of inspiration and magic., 18 Mar 2002
I am a maskartist, constantly looking for inspiration.Body paint, or decoration of the human skin is closely linked to masks and global traditions connected to maskuse. I love this book, and find it extremely useful in my work with masks. Not only when I decorate my own things, but in teaching and sculpting too. This book sends you on a spiritual journey of a special magical kind. I highly recommend it. I have had even 4 year - old pupils studying it for a long time with great joy, before their own decoration - work began.. good questions came up and started discussions about far away cultures.Wonders appeared.Get it!
