5.0 out of 5 stars Abraham ibn Ezra – a mediaeval 'Renaissance Man', 7 April 2003
By A Customer
It is quite a challenge to make a mediaeval thinker, embedded in the learning and debates of his day, accessible and relevant to a modern readership, but Irene Lancaster succeeds admirably in this study of an underappreciated Jewish thinker. I had come across ibn Ezra before, in Robert Browning’s poem, but had no idea who he was. It was therefore a revelation to discover the fascinating historical figure behind the literary personage. Lancaster’s book opens up the world of ibn Ezra – his adventurous meanderings through Europe, his multi-faceted thought, the religious and philosophical context of his work, and his reception by scholars. As a non-specialist, I found the survey of earlier Jewish, Christian and Muslim approaches to textual interpretation very helpful, for it manages to be wide-ranging without being burdensome. At the heart of the book is a translation of ibn Ezra’s ‘Introduction to the Torah’, which, with the help of a detailed commentary, allows us to see ibn Ezra at work as a creative interpreter and user of language. Ibn Ezra’s concern with the open-endedness of language has postmodern resonances, but as Lancaster points out, his aim ‘was to reach the centre of the circle, not to keep going round in circles’.
