5.0 out of 5 stars Zinn wants us to live in a better world, 3 Oct 2003
By Bert Ruiz "author/journalist" (Pleasantville, NY) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Quite frankly, Howard Zinn will never be a mainstream policy wonk. He is a maverick and proud of it. To this end, "Declarations of Independence" is a bold book that strongly stresses that governments should represent the interests of the majority...and not the influential.

Moreover, Zinn dares the reader to challenge conventional wisdom and examine events through his special prism. "The struggle for justice should never be abandoned on the ground that it is hopeless," the author nobly argues. It is a major theme in chapters one through eleven of his book. Overall the author points a lot of fingers at our leaders for promoting aggression in foreign policy. In my opinion, Zinn's "cross-examination" of American idelology is a honest and trustworthy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding. A must read!, 5 Jun 1999

This book is an absolute must read for anyone seriously interested in seeing through the fog of illusions all around us. It's also a heck of an interesting and fun read too! One of the top books of the century, as far as I am concerned, and it should be in the hands of every student.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fresh and valuable perspective, 15 May 1999
By A Customer
Zinn's book stands as a challenge for us to to the one thing that the average American hates most--to think. While it contains an obvious bias (which the author freely acknowledges), the worldview that Zinn advances in this book is timely and well evidenced. This book is a stunning wake up call for everyone who is even remotely concerned about where our society is headed. For those who like Zinn's work, I also reccomend Noam Chomsky.
