Book Description

10 Sep 2001
Decking is divided into four main sections. Part 1, 'The Basics' begins with an overview of what's involved (including the benefits of suing pre-fabricated decking sections), then describes what's needed before you start: there's full information about materials; planning; tools and safety; preparing the site and building foundations; installing posts, railings and so on; constructing stairs; laying the decking, and building covers and overheads. Part II - 'Decking Styles & Designs: The Projects' - features no less than 15 decking projects to choose from, from a simple low-level deck using prefabricated sections to a deck with a simple water feature. City-dwellers without gardens aren't left out: there are plans for a Patio deck in a small space and for a rooftop deck. Throughout, the reader is shown exactly how to complete each stage of the project in detailed step-by-step photographs, all with easy to follow text and captions. Part III - 'Help!' - Provides information on basic deck maintenance and on how to repair different parts of your deck. Part IV - 'Completing Your Outdoor Room - shows how to transform your deck into an 'outdoor room', with information on decorating with plants, on selecting furniture, installing water features and, finally, on special lighting schemes. With its emphasis on simple, achievable projects for average-sized gardens, this book truly offers everybody the chance to create their own 'outdoor room'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not for the complete novice 30 Sep 2003
Format:Hardcover
All round this is a good book if you want to build your own deck. It goes through the basics about planning the deck, the tools necessary and goes through 5 projects. However, a lot of the stages in each of the projects are repeated, leaving little time to expound on the key stages for each individual project. For example, virtually all the projects assumed a flat surface to start with - it would have been very useful to have a whole chapter about levelling the ground or fixing post and finding levels from that.
However, many concepts are well explained and nicely captured in pictures. Reccommended for someone with decent diy skills and a basic project - anything else and you'll need to look further afield.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decking 2 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book as we had planned on doing some decking as a surprise for my mum while she went away. This book was great for my partner as he had done decking once before and just needed general assistance, but for someone like me, it left me still asking lots of questions!! Excellent book if you have a handy man!!
