Disc I
The Gothic Invasion of Rome - Corruption drove the hungry horde of Visigoths to rebel against Rome and pride drove the Emperor Valens, heading a fractured Roman Empire, to take them on without support.
Hail Caesar! Of all Rome's many battles, perhaps the most important was internal. When Julius Caesar went head-to-head, with Gnaeus Pompey, the outcome would change the fate of the Western world.
Herman the German - The patrician leader Arminius, or Herman the German, was at the helm of one of the darkest ambushes in the history of Rome, dispelling the aura of invincibility that had long marched ahead of the vaunted legions.
Marathon - the first great invasion of the Persian empire was not thwarted by the Spartans, but by the Athenians. In a heroic effort, the hoplite warriors of the city-state triumphed in a fight against both greater numbers and the march of time.
Ramses II - As one of Egypt's greatest pharaohs, Rames II confronted the biggest menace to his reign as the Hittite Wing Muwwitallah threatened to break away from the hegemony of the Egyptian empire.

Disc II
Spartacus - Spartacus has long been one of the most famous figures of the ancient world. A Thracian gladiator with a gift for leadership, he led a huge revolt against Rome at the height of its power.
Thermopylae - In one of history's greatest displays of military heroism, 300 Spartans outside Thermopylae held off the vengeful Persians until the last Spartan had been killed.
Attila the Hun - No ruler in history represents the barbarian brutality as much as Attila the Hun, who swept through 5th-century Europe and emerged holding its future in his grasp.
The Birth of the Roman Empire - In a classic military conflict between two Ancient World superpowers, the great Macedonian phalanx clashed mightily against the heavily fortified Roman legion.
Boudicca: Warrior Queen - In the farthest flung province of the Roman Empire - Britain - a warrior queen named Boudicca rose in revolt.

Disc III
Cannae - In a classic example of double-envelopment manoeuvre, an under-fortified Hannibal inflicted the greatest ever defeat on the forces of Rome, who marched eight legions strong into their surprising defeat.
Crassus: Rich Man, Poor Man - Although he may have been the richest man in Rome, Crassus was the poor relation in the First Triumvirate. He needed military laurels to raise him to the vanity cost the lives of seven legions, his son and his own.
Gaugamela - Gaugamela was the greatest battle fought by Alexander the Great and it gave him control of the Persian Empire. Darius raised a titanic army against Alexander and picked the ideal spot for his cavalry-led force, but it was not enough.

This 3 DVD set has numerous battle included in its schedule. Unfortunately each show is punctuated heavily with commercial breaks (so we frequently reach a peak and then fade out) and the battle analysis is at best sketchy. I must admit that if I had known this was an American DVD show I would not have bought it as it lacks any true detal with each episode repeating itself several times within each 24 minute episode. The computer game graffics add very little to the show too because they do not show you anything of the strategies emplyed in the battles, but just stand in mostly for live actors to recreate clashes between forces. I'm very dissappointed in this DVD set and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone interested in the strategy of the battles involved as all the information is surface info which is lightly skated over.

I'd have to agree with both of the previous reviews, hence why I've given this 4 stars. If you are looking for 100% facts then I would say read a book on ancient history, if however you are interested in a little bit of history for entertainment, then you will probably like this. I happen to love both history and the video game Rome Total War which is used to show the battles here, so naturally I enjoyed this series.

However, there are faults. One of the major ones for me was the presenter; he has an immensely annoying way of talking, where he...just pauses at a random point in...mid-sentence. Also as another reviewer mentioned, when shown on TV there were commercial breaks, which is annoying because there are 2 recaps in each 20 minute episode. Also, I am not sure how historically accurate this is, in one episode the presenter himself gives different numbers of troops involded in a battle.

So overall, this is a fun, if brief, look at ancient battles. For me, it mostly did what it said on the tin - it's informing while being entertaining.

If you know or remember the "Time Commanders" television series, then you know what to expect from this documentary series. It's the "Total War" computer game franchise battle gaming technology being applied to actual historical battles. It is an effective way of quickly, cheaply and clearly recreating epic battles that would otherwise be almost impossible to do. That said, the gaming technology does not detract from this series, it is merely an addition to a well researched and delivered production.

There is a good balance between providing the background that lead to the momentous events covered in each episode. Experts in the subject matter lend life to what could be a boring CGI history lesson. The style is fresh and the story- and timeline is coherent.

Each episode is a short definitive work that is worth watching.
