Product Description

In this expose of the Israeli spy organization, ex-agent Victor Ostrovsky presents an insider's view of two decades of the Mossad's covert activities around the world. Amidst revelations of international political scandals, he gives an account of the scope and depth of the Mossad's influence, including the rearing and training of Jewish communities in the USA, Europe and South America in secret "self-defence" units. He also offers evidence of the organization's use of the drugs trade in order to pay the enormous costs of its far-flung clandestine operations, and portrays a network that has grown dangerously out of control, as internal squabbles have led to terrorist escapes and the pursuit of "policies" at odds with the interests of the state of Israel. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

I bought this in 1990 when it first came out after reading newspaper articles about a controversial new book exposing mossad secrets was to be published. The author was fired from the Israeli secret service, the Mossad and he gives his side of the story on that. Us readers can't really decide on that but the rest of the book is fascinating. Nearly half the book consists of his training, the various training exercises etc. This was what I was hoping the book would contain. The rest of the book has chapters on a number of mossad operations that Ostrovsky wasn't involved in,but very interesting nonetheless. Finally at the back of the book there are a number of diagrams showing the mossad organizational chart( very detailed ), organization of a station in an embassy, layout of the mossad academy, anti surveillance when meeting agents, and mossad reports.

I bought this book in the expectation that it would be a first person account of recruitment into one of the world's premier intelligence agencies, Mossad. In that respect it succeeded - mostly. Victor gives a very good account of his recruitment, training and some of the missions he was involved in. However this is undermined to a certain extent when he starts detailing and expanding on activities in which he was not directly involved. Now, considering the 'cell' structure of Mossad (similar to that of most operational intelligence units, i.e. need to know, autonomous operations and plausible deniability) he provides details of operations in which he was not directly involved that challenge our trust in the validity his account. That said, it is still a fascinating insight into the dark and murky world of an intelligence agency serving a country that has to remain one step ahead of it's enemies simply to survive as a nation state. Victor is now an artist in the U.S. - most of his work is based on his past as a spy and is really very good.

A "Must Read" 9 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Read this some time ago and very much enjoyed it. It provides a good deal of material on the less well known face of Israel, covering the highly funded and very capable secret services and the machinations that jerk the strings of so many other nations. Given that the vast majority of the press is manipulated to show Israel in a good light, this kind of expose does not often get the publicity it deserves.
I would recommend another book by a British disillusioned Jewish Israeli called "The Other Side of Israel" to complete the picture. Both are essential reading to enable understanding of the current political and social situation in Israel, and Israel's position with respect to the rest of the developed world.
