5.0 out of 5 stars December 5 Dec 2007
Format:Audio CD
I am an avid Moody Blues fan and bought this album last Christmas. I have since bought another copy for my wife. Like many other fans, I wasn't sure just how they would handle Christmas songs but I needn't have worried. They give every song their own unique, professional treatment and have such restful voices. I love this album and particularly December Snow, which I would rate as good as any track they have ever done (yes, as good as that!) If you like the Mooody Blues, or even if you are just looking for a good Christmas album, buy this! I couldn't believe how cheaply it was purchased from Amazon and I rarely stop playing it during the season.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising! 6 Nov 2010
Format:Audio CD
I'm a hard core Moody Blues fan since 1971. The Moody Blues have kept up with the times and during their career they've been asked about a Christmas album. As we all know, they declined until 2003 when they released their first, as they put it, "seasonal" album. This album is brilliant. This is not just an album for Christmas but all through the year. I play it on occasion through the year. All the songs are excellent with one exception and that's "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" the John Lennon/Yoko Ono Christmas song. The Moodies toned it down by leaving out the children's chorus and the repetition of "war is over". I never liked the song myself regardless of who sang it and I don't much care for it on a Moody Blues album. A few years before December came out, the Moodies did a version of "What Child Is This" for a charity album. It would have been better to place this song on December in place of Happy Xmas. Unfortunately, Ray Thomas is missing from the album. His flute arrangements and even a contribution from him would have made the album complete. Don't fret Moodies fans. Graeme Edge wrote a Christmas song called "Coconut Christmas" which didn't make the album. Most likely it will appear somewhere down the line. All in all, this album is a big surprise from a band that gave us such classics as the Core 7 and Long Distance Voyager. A Christmas album is not something you would expect from the Moodies but they pulled it off with some beautiful ballads such as In The Bleak Mid Winter, The Spirit Of Christmas, and the beautiful December Snow which they sing in concert. Their version of "White Christmas" is questionable. I never pictured White Christmas as a rocker and has a lot to be desired. If you're an avid Moody Blues fan, this album is for you. Read more ›

4.0 out of 5 stars Winter "Bluejays" 2 Nov 2003
By Martin A Hogan HALL OF FAME TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
It may come as a surprise to some that the Moody Blues would release a Christmas album, but they manage to pull it off. Ray Thomas is missing this time and although Graeme Edge is in the liner note photo, his work is not mentioned. The arrangements seem more like a throw back to "Bluejays" (1975), with the heavy orchestration and low key mood pieces. Hayward's three contributions are thoughtful breezy ballads, with great guitar work and magical keyboards. "Don't Need A Reindeer" stands out among the three. Lodge makes two contributions, but as is usually the case, his songs are melancholy and about loneliness and longing. Some of the lyrics seem stilted and forced. It surprising to see no Hayward/Lodge collaborations on this set.
There are several covers on this album and that can always be a tricky endeavor. "In The Quiet Of Christmas Morning (Back 147)" succeeds in maintaining the original mood of the piece. "In The Bleak Midwinter" stays true to its original nineteenth century poetic intent and its simple beauty. Even "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" is an acceptable remake keeping John Lennon's spirit alive. The Moody Blues have smoothed it over, without the raw simplicity that Lennon and Ono had with the original children's chorus. Longtime collaborator Mike Batt (with Tim Rice) contributed "A Winter's Tale"; a pleasant holiday song that is pure Tim Rice (written in 1989). Only "White Christmas" rides the fence of uncertainty, but that's only because no one has yet to ever match the Irving Berlin/Bing Crosby classic.
True Moody Blues fans will cherish this set but new comers may be put off. It's not meant to be pretentious or self important, it's just the Moody Blues singing and playing at their best. Time will tell whether this album becomes a Moody Blues classic.

... and that's Ray Thomas, otherwise it is the best collection of Christmas tunes that I've ever heard. I've only got into the Moody Blues within the last 5 years, and quickly collected their albums, but was sceptical about this one, especially without Ray. However, this year, I decided to take the plunge, and I'm so glad I did. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked their versions of all the old songs, particularly John Lennon's "Happy Xmas" - it's just a shame they cut it short however, and that Graeme Edge seemed to have little presence on the album. That said, there is an uncanny similarity to the Blue Jays (one of my all time favourite albums) on "Don't need a Reindeer", but my favourite song is "December Snow" - just magical.

I found that I had to keep playing it!
Just relax and listen to some new songs, some classics and some you liked by somebody else but have never bought.
