It's already been 25 years since the analogue LP record of this album was first released. This was one of the earliest albums released by Windham Hill Records. I was only a teenager at that time, but since then I don't know how many times I've listened to this AMAZING piano solo collection.
In 1987, I had a chance to go to one of his concerts. There was no internet or mobile phones in those days, so I had absolutely no idea what George Winston actually looked like. The venue was a prestigious concert hall for classical music in Japan, but just before the recital was due to begin, a man appeared on stage, wearing jeans with no shoes on and no hair. I thought he was one of the roadies who needed to do some more final adjustment on the piano or the microphone, but he sat at the piano and quietly started playing it. He was the George Winston!
For those who are not familiar with Winston's works, his piano style is not classical or jazz, and it's not like popular 'mood' piano and certainly not like a 'hotel lounge' kind of piano either. The sound of Winston's piano is clear, atmospheric and has a certain 'calming effect'. I'd recommend this CD to anybody who wants to spend the Christmas time and the whole winter quietly. It'd be a perfect Christmas present. If you've enjoyed his piano, his other albums, especially 'Autumn', would be a good one too!
FYI: This latest edition contains two extra tracks. Enjoy it!
