As an aficionado of the great singers of the first half of the twentieth century, I sometimes bemoan the quality of singers during the second half of the century. But the singing of Kenneth McKellar during his prime can stand comparison with that of any of his worthy predecessors. John McCormack was the most prominant of those predecessors. And while McKellar's work in opera and German Lieder can not match the Irishman's, his singing of the folk music of the British Isles and his forays into popular music outshine even McCormack's very worthy output of similar material.
Many music lovers under forty may be unfamiliar with the art of Mr. McKellar as he was at the height of his popularity more than a quarter of a century ago. Therefore this pair of compact discs may be the first introduction many have to the singing of Scotland's finest tenor. And a fine introduction they make, for they include excellent samples from nearly all of McKellar's fine Decca albums. We will likely never hear better versions of "She Moved Thro' The Fair" and "Down By The Sally Gardens". And the Hebridean and Highland songs are sung with the vocal and artistic perfection these fine copositions deserve. There are also several selections from McKellar's later Decca period that were very difficult for us "Yanks" to obtain and may be new to even some of his greatest overseas fans.
I am pleased by the popularity of the late Frank Patterson and The Three Irish Tenors, as they have done much to keep the repertoire and style of singing popularized by McCormack and McKellar alive and well. So all you fans of Frank Patterson, Louis Browne, Finbar Wright, Ronan Tynan and Anthony Kearns, take heed.

Kenneth McKellar, the great lyric Scottish tenor at his peak,
Reviewer: Ricardo Munro from San Joaquin Valley, California, USA
Kenneth McKellar, who is still pleasant to listen to for his wit, artistry and excellent diction was at his peak in his Decca years. He was best known for his Scottish songs in a classical "John Mccormack Style" but he crossed over very successfully into popular music, light classics and operatic arias. He sang in Italian, German, French and Welsh as well as Scots and English. Until recently these recordings from 1955-1975 have been unavailable(when his voice was at its peak of power and charm). Fiddler on the Roof SUNRISE SUNSET is superb and West Side Story's MARIA is the best and most tasteful recording I have ever heard. Of course, the majority of the recordings are traditional Scottish songs of the lowlands and Highlands (with a good number of Kennedy-Fraser , Kenneth MacLeod adaptations). My only disappointment really is that some of his best Irish recordings are not here nor his foray into Welsh.
McKellar of course came from another generation when Scots tried to out English the English so his Gaelic is very small. Late in her career he sang a few Gaelic choruses but mostly he sang late 19th century and early 20th century translations of the Big Songs.
But as an interpreter of the Songs of Burns and the Scots Musical Museum (the Lowland Scots tradition) McKellar was without peer. If you can get his KISMET recording. It is just great. I don't think he ever made a bad album although SOMETIMES his pop material is thin. His classical performances are ALWAYS first class. I just wish he had made more classical recordings in his prime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Listen and Swoon 20 Nov 2002

Many think of Kenneth McKellar as only performing traditional Scottish ballads. This box set shows the amazing range of what has to be one of the foremost tenors of his generation worldwide. His tone, range and clarity mark stand him shoulder to shoulder with the best.
Listen and swoon.

5.0 out of 5 stars my mckellar years 4 July 2008
Format:Audio CD
The tenor voice of kenneth mckellar has alwasys amazed me for its scope, tone quality and also cute versatility. He seems so able to sing anything with such convictition yet complet sentiment and feeling, down to last detail. his range of song style is about as wide as it is posible to get; rather then a `fixed` style as so many singers seem to have.to put it another way, he sings the song the way it`s ment to be sung rather then to suit a style of singing that he choose. A perfect example is the LP. handel`s famous songs and arias: mckeller is the only singer that i have heard record handel`s-`ombra-mai-fu` with the introduction befor the largo also to sing `love in her eyes sits waiting` which is a master piece of singing and voice control. His famous LP. is such a match with the voice of Patricia cahill-mellow harmony indeed. The Irish songs are sung with perfection to Irish folk legend mentality and sweetness; where as scottish folk-songs are sung with the ultimate in sensitivity and sentimentality. Altogather a very fine performer, a real showman and all of his work is to such a high standard. I first heard his voice in 1959 whilst still at school. I was so impressed that i have followed his career ever since. Now 50 years later i enjoy his records (of which i have most) as much as ever. mckellar is the singer of my life time and I really feel so lucky that he was there for me; and I`m sure for so many others worldwide. sincerely, clive sarjantson.
