I remember when Decca was bringing out this series of recordings of the Beethoven symphonies. The fidelity of the recordings was, for the time when they were made, very high and highly praised. Nowadays they don't have quite the impact of more modern recordings but are extremely acceptable. Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt was not, though, one of the critics favorite conductors, and he did not turn out to be one of the very best (think Karajan at a similar time). But this set of complete symphonies is a remarkable bargain and proves very rewarding to listen to.

These recordings are fairly old, about 1960s, but you wouldn't know it judging by the sound quality which is very good. The Vienna Philharmonic's playing is excellent (as always) under their conductor Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt. There are a great many complete sets of the Beethoven Symphonies available, but this should rate as one of the best and certainly a bargain at the present price.
