A masterpiece of texture 21 Sep 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I'm a fan of all the Chain Reaction label's "metal box" releases, but this is my favorite of them all. Various Artists (a tongue-in-cheek name -- these tracks are all by the same musician) packs an incredible amount of sonic sculpture and detail into the tracks on this album. He makes music that's descended from techno, house, and ambient dub, but with an apporach to sound design that is breathtaking. Sounds buzz back and forth through the stereo field, coated in a constantly shifting layer of "line noise" that makes them breathe like living things.

Washes of sonic whirrrrrr... 3 May 2000
By DAC Crowell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Like the seminal and brilliant Basic Channel 12"s, this release by 'Various Artists' is a wonderful symbiosis of minimal techno beats and washes of amorphous ambience. There are some short, terser and more experimental tracks here, especially at the beginning, but when you hit "Erode", it's all over, as the sound plunges into a dense and ambient cluster-chorded wash, underpinned by a very Basic Channel beat. This perhaps reminds me most of what would happen if you combined Pole's CDs (which I think are considerably inferior to this) with Cyrus's "Presence"/"Inversion" BC 12". Uncompromising yet very welcoming, this is a wonderful extension to the Basic Channel aesthetic and legacy as it appears to continue on on Chain Reaction. Definitely recommended!
Various Artists - Decay Product 22 Feb 2011
By scoundrel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The cleverly named Various Artists (and their debut Decay Product) stay true to the Chain Reaction spirit. Minimalism, drawn-out and reverbed tones, all thigns deep and wonderful. Their work are geared with more of a rhythmic sense than some of their compatriots who favor ambience, but this album is still full of sound and modulation. While several of the early tracks have heavier beats, by the time "No. 3 (Debit)" rolls around, the rhythm has become muted. "Erode" has some urgent synth washes that drive the track forward, and the final track, "Erosion 3," swims in watery tones and dubbiness. Another outstanding Chain Reaction release.
