The confusingly named Various Artists are another one of Chain Reaction's illustrious series of musicians exploring theouter edges of studio technique and the techno/dub interface. The Chain Reaction label itself is, loosely termed, the ambient arm of the pioneering techno imprint Basic Channel, and like the obscure artists working that particular vein, these Chain Reaction artists take the same rigorous scalpel tothe accepted notions of techno, dub, and even funk.
Various Artists generally work a minimalist groove from subtle beginning to elastic ending, surrounding it with dissolving vinyl hiss, the echoes of tape dust, the flotsam and jetsam of old synth diodes, and numerous other mysterious sounds. Revel in the immersive bitstream of "Erode", with its melancholic rivers of synth and sundry, or the relentless, monochromatic environs of "Melted", where tones are stretched, fragmented and pitched about like sine waves in a faulty audiometer--it's a warbling, woozy, yet wholly involving listen.
