A period in which the Wimbledon phenomenon reached still new heights in the world's sporting consciousness, the tennis action too, invariably rose to the occasion, not least Bjorn Borg's fifth successive defence of his Mens' singles title in 1980 following an epico fives sets with John McEnroe. There are the victories of Evonne Cawley and Chris Lloyd in the Ladies' Singles Championships of '80 and '81 - the lull before the storm that was Martina Navratilova, herself swept aside after six remarkable titles by the power of two time winner, Steffi Graf. When Borg is at last defeated in 1981 by a combative McEnroe, the Mens' title is disputed by the tempestuous left hander and old rival Jimmy Connors.
