Fierce Panda have always been purveyors of the latest and greatest in terms of underground indie music. without them, we'd probably not have half the decent bands we do today. so here's a brief rundown. in short, to celebrate 10 years on the front line, FP give us the imaginatively entitled "Decade". for an indication of the quality of this compilation, cast your eye over the contributors. there's everything from cover versions (Ash - "Punk Boy") to original recordings of big hits (more on that later) to stuff which never made it past the Limited Edition Vinyl stage.
in terms of the original recordings, some are noticeably different whereas some are merely rough around the edges. It takes a keen ear to spot the difference between the original recordings and the finished "hits" on songs such as Embrace's "All You Good Good People", whereas songs from Placebo and Easyworld are obviously different. The Bluetones' offering of an early "Bluetonic" even retains its original name ("No. 11").
as well as well known artists, there are also fairly new acts in the Fierce Panda's catalogue. Winnebago Deal, Death Cab For Cutie, Keane and Bright Eyes all make an appearance here.
of course, if you're not into indie music, you'd be insane to buy this compilation as even though it ranges from the heavier end of the spectrum (3 Colours Red - This Is My Hollywood) to the slow meanderings of a young Coldplay, it's still all guitar-based. overall though, i'd recommend this album to anyone who has ever bought anything from either Fierce Panda or one of the bands involved.
truly, truly remarkable.

Good collection 11 May 2004

Fierce Panda is one of those labels that we only dream about. Simon Williams started it and he was dedicated to discovering new exciting music. It started ten years ago and has released many records. I guess since they released Coldplay and Hundred Reasons first, they are visionaries. I am not sure that they are Creation Records, but they are pretty good. There was some focus of folk music like Bright Eyes and The Bluetones. Placebo and Seafood supplied some heavy rock. Some techno music by Lo-Fidelity Allstars. Some easy listening by Coldplay and Embrace, and also The Clientele. There are some unique bands like Polyphonic Spree and The Music. And then there is Kaito: who can compare to their racket. There was no overall esthetic. Just what was relevant at the time? There is some leanings to moody soft rock with emotion. Some of these songs are not available on any CD because they were released as singles. Let's celebrate.
