Product Description

For his new ONYX CD Pascal is joined by his wife Ami for a programme of French masterworks for orchestra by Debussy and Ravel in arrangements for two pianos. The arrangement of 'La Mer' is the Rogés' own, the others are by the composers. The transcription by Maurice Ravel (1908) of Debussy s 'Fetes', in the words of the distinguished musicologist Maurice Hinson, "has been translated into the two-piano idiom with independent artistry [and] ranks with the best original writing in the two-piano medium." Unlike Liszt s single-movement 'Spanish Rhapsody' for solo piano, Ravel s is a four-movement suite for two pianos: Prélude à la Nuit , Malagueña , Habanera and Feria . It was written within the space of a few weeks in October but built around the Habanera which had formed the first movement of his 'Sites articulaire' of 1895. Its recycling may have had something to do with Ravel s resentment at being accused of plagiarising a passage from Debussy s La soirée dans Grenade of 1903 written in the same key with a habanera rhythm and a similar use of an insistent C sharp clashing against the harmonies. Ravel pointedly attached the date 1895 underneath his Habanera in the two-piano score of Rapsodie espagnole and the orchestral version which he prepared in the early months of 1908. Pascal Rogé has for many years been considered the prime interpreter of French piano repertoire. His recordings of Satie and the Debussy Preludes (ONYX4004) are benchmark recordings. BBC Radio 3 when reviewing the Debussy Preludes said they "came close to a definitive interpretation" and Telerama in France commented "Très beau, tres éduisant. Souverain".For his new ONYX CD Pascal is joined by his wife Ami for a programme of French masterworks for orchestra by Debussy and Ravel in arrangements for two pianos. You can't really beat the repertoire on this disc, taking in various works by Ravel and Debussy for two pianos or four hands; they really are among the ripest plums of the orchestral writing of the early 20th century - a particularly fruitful period in France - and to hear them in this particular sequence is an absolute delight. Fetes is not often played in this arrangement, making it a special pleasure, while the two piano version of La Mer is the Roges' own, therefore something different from the familiar 4-hand version recorded by the Duo Crommelynck and others. The two Ravel works are quite contrasting in tone, while the opening Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune is pure bliss. The Roge duo are delightful throughout the recital and have excellent ensemble; it is the first recording I have heard by them, although Pascal Roge is familiar from his superb playing of French repertoire going back to the 70s. They end with the celebratory fizz of a Saint-Saens Scherzo that is not often played but dazzles a bit in the manner of his Wedding Cake Caprice - perhaps not quite in the class of all the other pieces, but a generous and bubbling encore.

If you like this album , can I suggest you have a look at:

B002Y2BTXY

by the same artists.

You will see this CD is called "Wedding Cake", as it had been issued just after Pascal Rogé's wedding with Ami,

his present wife (and formerly his piano partner ONLY...Now they play EVEN BETTER ! ).

Inside that Cd, there are several pictures of the ceremony, which took place in a Japanese church in 2010,

and Pascal Rogé, who is a friend, had told me a "Wedding Cake 2" would be planned...

Apparently, this CD was delayed -and P.R. forgot to tell me as he had promised ! -

I now discover the existence of the CD you're looking at .....

So much so that I couldn't resist the pleasure of telling you there is its elder brother elsewhere in the Catalogue...as delicious as the latest.
