There can be a tendency among serious collectors to dismiss Naxos discs as worthy and value for money but with rather ordinary performances. Not here. If like me, you treasure your Debussy discs by Cantelli, Ormandy, Karajan, Rattle et al this recording still deserves your time and money. It is such a success for three main reasons. Firstly Jan Markl has an unerring ability to pace the music so that the full atmosphere and changes of mood are caught with complete fidelity. Secondly, the Lyon orchstra play magnificiently throughout with rich strings and delicate woodwind which need fear no comparison with the best ensembles past and present.Thirdly, the disc benefits from a really outstanding recording (the best I can remember from Naxos) which affords richness to the strings whilst allowing every detail of Debussy's masterful scoring to take its proper place in the soundpicture. Collectors will also be delighted with the rarities here including the orchestrated Clair de Lune and the Trois Etudes. In short a fantastic bargain which deserves immediate investigation by both the novice and seasoned collector alike.
