Most Helpful Customer Reviews

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Bill Glen on 25 Aug. 2014
Format: Audio CD
This disc is simply superb! I am well aware Karajan's earlier DG 1960s recordings of these works are wonderful imaginative performances beautifully played and they have gained a classic status but I am baffled that these later versions have not been so well received by some reviews, including the penguin guide, placing these performance well behind the earlier DG recordings with even one comment I can recall being slightly sniffy about the flute playing in the Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, which I find has become one of my favourite versions. This is a marvellous account of the score.

There is no doubt that Karajan's conducting can divide opinion probably more than most at times but here, for me at least, I am intrigued by the sounds, the colours, the ebb and flow, that Karajan achieves in these later digital recordings, especially in La Mer. These are readings of a special artistic order. The earlier DG analogues are special but after sampling tracks from both I settled on the later digital readings which I find take me closer into these scores. The Ravel pavane as recorded here, has a weight as well as a delicacy to it which makes for a powerfully delineated account. For years I was largely put off by the penguin guide, which whilst praising the earlier DG analogue accounts, is less enthusiastic about these later versions, but having discovered these readings for myself at last, only very recently, I find that these are valuable accounts that I will be regularly returning to.
