Yes, there's good old Flaxen Hair and Arabesque and Golliwog's Cake Walk, and so on ... but you also get a host of utterly surreal and enchanting pieces such as his Estampes and Images.
Playing the whole set through from start to finish is a suitably intense way to penetrate Debussy's unusual mind, as each piece is completely different from all the others.
The quality of playing is superb, as the pianist seems to have captured something of the period and situation in which they were written - an admirable achievement.
The box they come in is irritatingly cumbersome, as are so many of these box sets, being in two separate double jewel cases, taking up an inordinately large amount of space, but we'll let that pass and merely add more words on the topic of efficient packaging in the hope that record companies sit up and listen eventually.
Beware, btw - the pamphlet which comes with this set is in French (understandably - it's a French production, and after all, Debussy *was* a French composer) so you may need to go to your dictionary to read it.
In summary, a fascinating set, and at a highly worthy price. Recommended.
Well-known and rightfully acclaimed for his interpretations of French piano music, especially Satie, Aldo Ciccolini gives us, in these beautiful Debussy recordings from 1991, a reading that is masculine and fresh, yet lyrical and full of colour.
Compared with renditions by others, Ciccolini's Debussy consistently stays at the top, or above the top. Even Gieseking aficionados will find, I think, this interpretation meaningful.
If you love Debussy, you'll treasure this recording - buy it.
