This Might Not Be What You Need !!! 8 April 2012

Amazon Verified Purchase
Everything about the product is great which is why I will elave it to everyone else to talk about that (and also why I am keeping it though I have run into some issues).

I bought this just wanting to try out Linux. When I put in the 64bit version (since my processor is 64 bit) nothing happened. With a alot of messing around on the 32 bit menu I got the 64bit to kind of load but after a couple of hours accomplished nothing. Then, on a forum post, I came across terms like "ia64", "i386", and "amd64". I realised that the CDs form this set were trying to load the "ia64" version (which I think should work for most intel processors and thus most people because intel is common). I however have an AMD Athalon 64 3200+ which (I think) means that I need a download of an "amd64" verion of Linux.

So check the processor before you buy this product. Unless you want the DVD of information that goes with it. That part is fantastic and is why I am keeping the CD. I am hoping that with a bit more research I can find a free download on Debian's website.

The Official Debian 6 release takes eight DVDs.

Here is a list of places you can get the official disk images burnt to disk. [...]
If you have DSL or faster Internet access, you can install from a small "netinst" CD image, and let the system get most of the stuff online after the basics are in place. You'd only need the CD/DVD set if you had dial-up or no Internet access.

Before buying burnt disks from anyone, find out if they are compiled "amd64" (64-bit) or "i386" (32-bit). If you have more than 4 GB of RAM, get the 64-bit compilation.

Debian is an excellent system. I've been using GNU+Linux since 1992 and Debian since 1998. I try other distributions, and I always come back. Debian just works, and it's the most complete, coherent free software collection anywhere.
