3.0 out of 5 stars It does exactly what it says on the tin..... 6 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
Deathstalker charts the adventures of a barbarian swordsman who becomes involved in a competition to become the heir of the evil sorcerer Muncar. On his way he has to recover a magic sword, fight hords of baddies and rescue several scantily clad maidens... of course.

The film has been completed to a budget probably similar to a single episode of Zena, and the special effects and sets are poor (even for an eighties barbarian movie!) On the plus side, there is loads of dark humour, a couple of excellent cameo performances, and a hilerious soundtrack that feels like it has been robbed from a spaghetti western! Needless to say that the femail members of the cast have been issued with little of no clothes, and the director takes every opportunity for these to fall off!!!

This film is impossible to rate objectively. If you are looking for another Lord of the Rings, go elsewhere. It scores zero. But If you don't take your films too seriously and you are prepared for a low budget, ham-acted but darkly funny and sexy barbarian romp, look no further. Top marks for a boys night in with a shed load of beer and a pizza!

3.0 out of 5 stars Heroes and fools ........ are the same thing! 3 May 2005
By Cartimand TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Whilst certainly not as entertaining as the brilliant Deathstalker 2, this first outing for our rather dangerous hero is still a cut above the usual Conan clones.

From the first scene, where an almost unfeasibly musclebound Rick Hill slaughters a bunch of inbred freaks, skewers an opportunist kidnapper and then starts to ravage his beautiful woman prisoner, we understand that this hero is quite an ambiguous character and we're never quite sure if he's batting for good or for evil.

Told by a witch of three unimaginably powerful artefacts and tempted by thoughts of glory, Deathstalker treks to Munkar's castle, where the evil wizard (is there any other kind?) has organised a tournament to find the greatest warrior in the land, to whom has been promised the inheritance of the kingdom. It is, of course, a trick. Munkar merely wants to eliminate any opposition to his nefarious plans and does everything in his power to kill the greatest threat of all - our eponymous hero.

The combat sequences are generally well done and surprisingly brutal on occasion. A fair bit of nudity, sometimes tasteful (and featuring some *extremely* attractive women!), sometimes verging on soft-porn in a couple of scenes. Some great black humour adds another dimension to the proceedings - my favourites being Munkar gradually feeding an unfortunate prisoner to a pet "thing" in a box, the "dashing" Salmaron rescued by Deathstalker, Munkar's servant (expertly played by Marcos Wolinsky - one of the few actors to turn up again in Deathstalker 2) being transformed into a woman and, of course, the first appearance of the, now legendary, pig-headed warrior. His inventive use of an impromptu club is a genuine laugh-out-loud moment!...

I get the feeling though that Roger Corman wasn't quite sure whether to play it straight or go for greater comedy value. On occasion, Rick Hill seems to take things a tad too seriously (some supposedly profound utterances, such as in my title, being slightly cringeworthy) and, in this respect, the movie kind of falls between two stools and is not entirely successful.

Clear and bright picture quality throughout, but only 4:3 aspect ratio and the audio is some early incarnation of Dolby that falls rather short of the DTS we usually expect. No extras of any value on the DVD either.

Enough nitpicking though! At this bargain price, Deathstalker is a worthwhile addition to anyone's DVD collection, but trust me, if you quite liked this one, you will really *love* Deathstalker 2! Read more ›

2.0 out of 5 stars They can't all be Conan 25 Jun 2012
Format:DVD
If you're considering this, then you've watched all the good ones and are doing some genre research in the hope of finding a gem of a movie tucked away in a darkened corner. To be fair, you're not far off with this one as this is one of the better B movie Conan rip offs. With your expectations managed accordingly, you might even enjoy it. There's plenty of action on offer, it's not pedestrian by any means but don't expect to see the slick choreography seen in bigger budget sword and slash fests. The story is well worn and the acting is hammy as ever but they have had a crack at the costumes and sets. Rick Hill has loads of muscles but none in his face it would seem, as it doesn't change much when he delivers his lines, unlike Lana Clarkson; she genuinely seems to believe every word she's saying, even when half nekkid! Having said that, this is an enjoyable romp and a welcome addition to the genre.

1.0 out of 5 stars Deathstalker review 18 April 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Another sword and sorcery epic with some pretty wooden acting. Rick Hill is as wooden as a pine forest. Lana Clarkson turns up and plays a very feisty female warrior but is bumped off three quarters through the film without doing very much which is a shame as she is about the best thing about the film. There is plenty of gladitorial type scenes and the film is not short of action, but you would like to think as there were more films made with the Deathstalker title in them they would hopefully be a lot better than this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Carry on Conan 22 Feb 2008
Format:DVD
Just rented this; funny and quite sexy in bits, with its gorgeous women mostly unclad. The hero's frequent wistful gazing into the distance somehow reminded me of a bewildered Steve Martin!
Its worth seeing as part of a comedy, or a Barbarian, night line up but I wouldn't buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a mans world 25 May 2006
By AJ-27
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this film about a week after buying and being dissapointed by the Warrior & the Sorceress. Deathstalker however did not dissapoint!

In Deathstalkers world the men rule. If a man 'wants' a women he'll simply walk up to her and take her, unless she is with another man, in which case he'll first fight (and possibly kill) the other man and then take the women.

This is a great piece of entertainment for a small price, the fight scenes arn't bad, the storyline is a bit iffy, and the female casting is very nice - with ladies wearing very little and with the sort of bodies Tinto Brass would appreciate.

Overall I give the film 4stars, but add the 5th as it is very good value.
