Veronica Stallwood was born in London, educated abroad and now lives near Oxford. In the past she has worked at the Bodleian Library and more recently in New College library.

I picked this book up after reading Veronica Stallwood's excellent Oxford Exit. It turned out to be her earliest crime novel. There is a powerful sense of small town malignancy that runs through this sinister psychological work. Reminiscent of Ruth Rendell but with better character development. A very good read.

This is the fourth Stallwood book I have read and it is very different to the others. A very strange story and exceptionally difficult to get through. I compared notes with others who have tried to read it and we all had to keep leaving it and going back to it. Some simply never got to the end but I persisted. I can't say I enjoyed it. One continually annoying factor, Oxford is a city not a town.
